Sometimes I am blithely unobservant. Arriving at the decision to recognize Rose Red based on one of those AI recommendation machines, I never noticed that it was 1) by Stephen King, and 2) the four hour version of a television special. In retrospect, I’m really not definite why I decided to witness it, since vexed house anxiety movies generally don’t grab me. But I did, and after a moment of apprehensive realization discovered that I was having fun watching it.

The yarn isn’t anything spectacularly modern. Joyce Reardon (Nancy Travis), a parapsychology teacher, bets her entire career on the possibility of finding measurable psychic phenomena at an eerie mature mansion (Rose Red) in the heart of Seattle. Said mansion has a long history of eating people, and Reardon’s understanding is to invite a selection of psychics to employ a weekend at the house in order to wake it from a dormant area. Her ace in the hole is Annie Wheaton (Kimberly Brown), an autistic 15 year obsolete who is an industrial strength tele-everything.
Sure enough, the house wakes up, fingers secure lopped off, people drown, and a whole host of equally dismal things initiate to happen. As the mysteries about the house originate to unravel, things win even worse and it becomes definite that Rose Red has no draw of letting anyone go. From that point on it is a pure battle for survival.

The house is the trusty star of the film. It is enormous, rotund of queer rooms and interconnected hallways, and has a knack for rebuilding and changing itself. CBS went all out to gain it a spooky masterpiece, and they did a favorable job of it. It’s the kind of nightmare that you really would like to visit. Deem of it as a fearful theme park and you have the atmosphere.
Acting varies, but is generally decent. I’m not certain about Nancy Travis though. She makes Joyce on of those sublimely irritating characters that you initiate out sympathizing with and wind up hoping she gets his with an axe. No such luck. Julian Sands and Matt Ross are colorful and everyone else has moments of greatness.
So I likes the exhibit after all. Since it’s made for TV, don’t question a lot of gore or out and out violence. The film starts a bit slowly, but the upside of that is that king spends as noteworthy time on character development as he does on location twists. While this isn’t a masterpiece, it’s worth watching on a slothful Saturday afternoon with buckets of popcorn.
Rose Red, a spectacular miniseries written by horror-master Stephen King and directed by Craig Baxley (Storm of the Century), was shown on ABC in leisurely January 2002. Many reviewers in the media were not exactly indignant about this film. I did not contemplate it when it first aired, though I deeply wished to. Eventually, I bought the DVD; I was ready to observe it. I enjoyed it throughly.

I assume Nancy Travis’ role as Joyce Reardon was a small overdone, however. (Maybe Ms. Travis should objective stick to Comedy.) I was hypnotized by Kimberly J. Brown’s performance as Annie Wheaton, a autistic telepath. I also could not encourage but adore Julian Sands’ portrayal as the incredibly witty, incredibly psychic Cut Hardaway. The get is haunting and gorgeous, and it makes me wish there was a CD available that had that on it (10 points go to Gary Chang!) .
As for the movie, I contemplate that the beginning characterization is something that was significant, and it was a nice switch from the usuaul gore fest you in Horrors today. Bravo, Stephen. The special effects are estimable. Flying stones, building houses, close-ups that regain your heart going, ghosts that create you stupefied of what may be sleeping on the other side of your bed. Not to mention the magnificent animatronics made for the role of Ellen Rimbauer. Some people have found it chillingly scary, but I didn’t bag it all that unpleasant (And I’m only 13!) .
Now for the place. The basic tale is powerful like Shirley Jackson’s THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE. (Or was it Hell House? ) “Some Houses Are Born Abominable”. You betcha. This house, which was built in the slack 1800s/early 1900s, builds on to itself (To understand more about the history of Rose Red, I highly suggest the page-turner THE DIARY OF ELLEN RIMBAUER: MY LIFE AT ROSE RED) . So, crazy Joyce Reardon, obsessed with Rose Red, leads a team of psychics into Rose Red to wake up the supposed “stupid cell”. Soon, the house’s tiring, spirits, who were never really gone, launch to reek havoc and people commence disappearing. Everything leads up to sunless secrets revealed and a climatic ending that is predictable.

The reason why I say FOUR STARS, and not five, is that by the time you approach to Disk Two of the DVD, after the “statue incident” (You’ll know what I mean when you accept there), you commence wondering when this movie will slay. Though every single fragment is notable in my plan, I gain it does secure slightly long-winded. The Special Effects are quite incredible, however.
As for the Special Features of the DVD, there isn’t a whole lot. There’s new storyboard designs, a 50 petite long documentary on the making of ROSE RED, a counterfeit documentary on Ellen’s diary (I reflect that was supremely creative), artwork, a trailer and Commentary. It does give a in-depth witness at everything, but it didn’t procure me exicted or anything.
All in all, I hold it is a mammoth movie to eye when you have an inaugurate four hours (insert snicker here) . Kudos to King and Baxley for a job well done.

The Killer Babe Stomps on the Killer Blade on this Great South Korean Wuxia Swordplay Adventure!![]()
During the Korean New wave, the country has come out with real phenomenal dramas, horror, and a few swordplay epics. Two of the more successful films of Korean epics are the terrific Period adventure film “Musa the Warrior” and the Wuxia Fantasy Epic “Bichunmoo”. There have also been other attempts to produce a Wuxia epic and most of them are either a hit or a miss. “Shadowless Sword” (aka. Muyeong Geom, retitled “Legend of Shadowless Sword”) is from Kim Yung-jun, the same director of “Bichunmoo”. This film fares a lot better when in regards to screenplay and action sequences compared to Kim`s first Wuxia film. The direction is much more coherent and solid this time. Action Junkies will certainly be entertained with this film, even though it was released 3 years ago in 2005 (despite New Line has invested in this film, it is now only getting a U.S. release?), the film still stands as one of the most entertaining Wuxia epics I’ve seen from South Korea.
10th century Korea, the Balhae Dynasty have all but fallen due to an invasion. Resistance fighters are hard pressed to find a new leader when all members of the Royal family have perished save one; Prince Jeong Hyeon (Seo Jin Lee). To avoid attention, a lone female warrior named Soha (Yoon So-yi, ARAHAN) is dispatched to find the Prince. Unbeknownst to her, the self-exiled Prince has become a dealer of used goods and have no intensions of returning to royalty. To make matters more complicated, the Killer Blade Army led by Gun Hwa-Pyeong (Hyeong Jun-Shin) with his second in command; lovely Mae (Ki-Yong Lee) is also on the trail of the Prince to assassinate him. Soha must convince the wayward prince just how important he is to her country’s fate, awaken his fighting skills and protect him from the Killer Blade army.
While “Bichunmoo” had a more intricate storyline, its script was almost impossible to follow. Kim Yung-jun’s second film has a larger budget and his directorial skills seems to have been honed. “Shadowless Sword” (I prefer to call it by its original title) has a simple storyline and is very predictable. No surprises can be had with this film, the film is actually a chase film; the two leads are being pursued all over while fighting their way back to Balhae. The usual formulas are omnipresent, Soha and Prince Jeong find each other; they bond and learn to care for each other with the usual twists in their past relationship. Its predictability may be somewhat disappointing if one is expecting a more complex script. However, the two leads are well-developed and the film’s pace and style is mesmerizing enough that the film is never dull and boring.
The film’s main draw and its greatest strength will have to its nicely executed swordplay and fight sequences. There are lots of nifty forest battles and a nicely shot underwater fight (although this may require a suspension of disbelief). The encounters between women-warriors Soha and Mae are truly exciting and quite enchanting. Their fights are beautifully shot, well-choreographed and intense. It was no accident that So-yi Yoon was cast as our female heroine after her performance in the action-fantasy “Arahan”. The actress is charismatic, agile and once again proves that she is capable in the film’s physical aspects. Lee Ki-Yong also proves a worthy rival, she is in every way Soha’s equal in martial arts skills. The film has a lot of fights and cool poses; even shurikens are thrown, high-flying Martial Arts are the film’s style of fighting and rivals those seen in some of the best Chinese Wuxia epics. I’ve noticed that Korean filmmakers have started to evolve their own ‘stylized’ blood splattering effects, this time with a lot of “explosive” attitude.
While Yoon So-yi and Lee Ki-yong does undoubtedly steal the show, the main villain, played by Hyeong Jun Shin (Bichunmoo) is an almost identical twin to the villain in “Gingko Bed”. I’m not sure, the actor does a decent job with his character overall, but something about the `eye-liner’ just turns me off. Gun Hwa-Pyeong is more than a one-dimensional villain, his goals and motives are actually one that can generate sympathy but I suppose there are men who can pull off `mascara’ and there are those who can’t. Seo jin Lee does keep the movie moving, his character’s devices to avoid his would-be protector and his assailants manages to add more depth to the film’s simple plot. Also, Prince Jeong’s change in attitude and his past does give some added `meat’ to its plot. The most underused character is Mae, her character has a lot of potential but she seemed underdeveloped. The woman is loyal to Kun but their relationship does leave the reasons to mere assumptions by the audience.
The film also has cleverly paced bits of satire in the first half as our two leads encounter a gang led by a character who looks like the Korean knock-off of “Captain Jack Sparrow” that made me crack up. The interlude where Soha and Prince Jeong encounter a band of bandits who look like `tribute’ characters to “House of Flying Daggers” is a nice touch. The film is focused in its direction and the set designs are also quite good. The costumes are elaborate enough to draw attention and yet, they don`t look too superficial.
A film like “Shadowless Sword” will either shine or fail with its promise of pure action entertainment and on this promise it didn`t falter. The film is loaded with highly stylized martial arts that would definitely more than make up for its faults. The movements are precise and graceful enough while maintaining its hard-hitting intensity. Many would compare it to “Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon” which would be unfair (personally, I wasn’t really that impressed with that movie). It`s a different film entirely and “Shadowless Sword” does stand on its own. If you want a lot of nicely shot stylized martial arts then this film will not disappoint.
“SHADOWLESS SWORD” is a substantial entry to Korea’s foray into Wuxia/Swordplay adventure. The film is definitely entertaining and enjoyable from beginning to end. The director’s cut clocks in at 2 hours, and the direction is to be commended that it feels like it was a mere 90 minutes. Its abundance in action sequences, bits of humor, eye-candy wirework, the film goes at a pace that exudes pure entertainment that I forgave the perfunctory romance and almost too melodramatic ending.
I’ve said before in my previous review and I’ll say it again: “It’s the Best South Korean Wuxia Swordplay Fantasy Adventure I’ve seen thus far!”…and I’ve seen them all.

An excellent Korean take on Chinese martial-arts films![]()
“The Legend of the Shadowless Sword” would be considered among the greatest wuxia epics of our time but for one little detail: the world has already experienced the unspeakable brilliance of films like Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. And make no mistake, this film is Korea’s attempt to duplicate the success of these modern classics both artistically and financially. The result is an almost-great film steeped in female empowerment, classic martial-arts philosophy, and Korean history that only missed classic status by a decade or so.
First off, let me say that the leading ladies of “Shadowless” are amazing. Yun So-i is brilliant as Soha, a female warrior tasked with bringing an exiled prince back home after an organization known as The Killer Blade Army murders the entirety of the royal family, leaving him as the only successor to the throne. Soha and the prince, Jeong-Heyon (played by Lee Seo-jin) who is also quite the fighter, are tracked and ambushed by the Killer Blades led by a seriously vamped-out lady killer. The confrontations between the opposing sword-wielding visions of beauty provide some seriously exciting duels that are on par with the best of the genre.
The heart of the story largely focuses on the classical myth/philosophy of Asian swordplay that each blade has within it an evil spirit that gathers strength as it drinks human blood. This spirit is said to be able to envelope and consume it’s user once it gathers enough strength through death and suffering. This is a fantastic metaphor for the effect taking a life has on a person’s being. What better way to kill one’s own soul than by slaughtering so many as to becomes altogether indifferent to suffering? This is the essence of evil. Soho’s philosophy -bequeathed to her at a young age by a passing hero- is that if the sword is taken up only to protect that which is precious and not to do harm that the shade within will gain no power from the act of killing. Thus, a righteous warrior has a shadowless sword.
The coolest thing about “Shadowless” is arguably the costumes. Every scene features some of the most visually interesting outfits and uniforms I’ve ever seen in this kind of film. Big thumbs up on that. The movie itself looks wonderful and very polished, though many of the scenes feel like retreads of previous wuxia films. There is an interesting underwater battle that could have been brilliant if not for the ridiculous sight of dozens of ninjas sailing over the river throwing hundreds of shurikens into the water for several minutes on end. How many of those things do they keep on them at one time anyways? There are some other over-the-top moments that may make one think of Fist of the North Star and the delayed explosions that resulted from the combat in that classic anime cheesefest. But timed detonations somehow make even less sense when they are inflicted by a sword. What, chopping a guy’s head off or bisecting him at the waist or even vertically isn’t good enough anymore? These are a few of the problems that keep “The Legend of the Shadowless Sword” out of the same league as the modern works of art it emulates. The love story is unconvincing after having seen the incredible beauty of House of Flying Daggers, and the fights -while highly entertaining- are simply not as good as those in “Crouching Tiger”.
In spite of it’s few flaws, I would qualify “The Legend of the Shadowless Sword” as a must-see for fans of martial-arts or Asian cinema in general. This one won’t enjoy the crossover appeal of the movies I name-checked earlier, but it should thoroughly satisfy fans of the wuxia genre. Not perfect, but worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as some of the greats.
Why did they HAVE to change the name? (4 1/2 stars)![]()
Seriously, I just want to know what marketing genius thought adding “The Legend of the” to the title would make it more appealing to the US audience (Drunken Master 2 becomes Legend of the Drunken Master). With the exception of Dragon Dynasty, the now defunct Tartan Asian Extreme, and few smaller companies, US DVD distributors love to toy with these films.
The description lists this film as being in 1.33/1 aspect ratio. Specialty sites have it listed as being in its original 2.35/1 ratio. Let’s hope they’re right. As of this writing, there is no running time listed. If it comes in at anything under 113 minutes, you’ve been had. US distributors like to try and get these films down to under 100 minutes. That is the magic number for our attention spans apparently. The bottom line is that if they keep the aspect ratio proper and don’t hack anything out of it, you’ll be in for a real treat. Here’s my review of the Korean import.
Shadowless Sword is another great entry from Korea, a country that has spent the new millennium really carving out their place in the asian film world. The story is basically just like King Ralph, except Peter O’ Toole has to protect John Goodman from assassins before he can get back to Buckingham Palace and install a bowling alley in the royal bedchamber. Ok, so it’s a little different than that. But it is an ‘escort the VIP’ movie.
SS is from the same director that gave us Bichunoo, another fantastic film. It has a great cast from films like “Guns and Talks” and “Arahan”. SS is a swordplay epic. For the laymen, it would be in the same vein of a Crouching Tiger or a Hero or House of Flying Daggers. Period piece, acrobatic wire-fu, lots of swordplay. And while it may not have the budget, star power, and exposure of the previously mentioned films, it can absolutely hold its own against them.
The acting is spot on. The story, while not anything new, is still very engaging. And the action is certainly well worth the watch. Although not quite as graceful as some of it’s HK counterparts, the wire work is creative and integrated well into the sequences. The visual approach is stylish without being over-the-top. And it does have a great score, too.
Fans of asian swordplay movies would be wise to give this one a look. It doesn’t have the depth of story and character that those looking for something more in the drama category are looking for. And while the action is great, it’s not wild and insane like a Kitamura movie or a Hark film, and certainly not as blood-filled. The action sequences would be considered reserved compared to how those guys work. So if you’re looking for a good, solid swordplay epic that is subtle and understated while being quite entertaining and action-oriented, this would be a fine choice.

Sony/TriStar does a better job on this double-feature disc of two of the 1990s Godzilla films than they did on the poor disc of “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth.” This time the films are in widescreen and stereo. Unfortunately, they are level-headed dubbed (and very poorly, too), and the extinguish credits are peaceful chopped off, but I can at least recommend buying this disc for its improved visual and audio quality.
(In a side notice, Sony/TriStar has impartial made available three of the fresh Godzilla films in widescreen editions with 5.1 sound and a choice of English dub or Japanese with subtitles: “Godzilla vs. Megaguirus,” “Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack,” and “Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla.” They may also release the two film on the this DVD in individual, deluxe packages, so you may want to wait a bit before deciding to consume up this disc.)
However, I can only recommend one film on this disc, the terrific “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah,” which brings a conclusion to the 1990s `Heisei’ series of Godzilla films in an apocalyptic fable that links assist to the modern 1954 “Godzilla.” Godzilla’s radioactive heart has started to melt down, a condition that threatens to raze the entire planet. The military scrambles to gain a draw to prevent the slay of the world, while psychic Miki tries to track down Godzilla’s son, now a tough teen who looks like a half-sized Godzilla. And on top of all this, a unusual creature has suddenly appeared, born out of the weapon that killed the modern Godzilla befriend in 1954: the mutating crustacean/dragon beastie Detoroyah. The action is plentiful, as are the effects, and the film fair thunders along. It’s everything you want in a Godzilla film. Godzilla Jr. facing the crab-leg version of Destoroyah is one of the large monster fights, the finale at the airport is knowing, and the ending is heartbreaking. It’s a astronomical blueprint to ruin the second Godzilla series. If this film stood on its acquire, I’d give it five stars, easily.

In fact, it’s best that you don’t contemplate of this disc as a double-feature at all, but a single disc containing “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah,” with “Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla” as a bonus feature. Because “SpaceGodzilla” is Dreadful. Made factual before “Detoroyah” by a novel director who came out of Japanese teen films, “SpaceGodzilla” is lifeless and utterly comic. Godzilla Jr. looks like Barney the dinosaur, SpaceGodzilla is a ridiculously lumbering thing, and the military’s recent super-robot, MOGUERA (based on a robot from the 1957 film “The Mysterians”), looks like some kid’s transformer toy, only not as well constructed and with Woody Woodpecker’s head. The situation is sloppy — something about SpaceGodzilla imprisoning Godzilla Jr. while a conspiracy almost wrecks the anti-Godzilla team called G-force — and the performers behold bored. The large action sequences seem to go on forever while nothing happens. The finale is impartial Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla standing far away and roaring at each other, while the military fiddles endlessly with their useless machines. The special effects are unpleasant and inactive as well. Not even Godzilla fans will be able to tolerate this film for long. On it’s acquire, “Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla” is worth only one star, easily. So I’ll have to average my rating out and give this package three stars.
I recommend this disc for “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah,” which is colossal even in dubbed format. Explore the other film, positive, but believe of it as a bonus not factored into the impress. You’ll feel better that method, and $16.99 is a delicate glowing trace for a edifying, widescreen, stereo Godzilla film. (But withhold your fingers crossed for even better editions in the future.)

The release contains 2 films on one disc – on Side A 1994′s “Godzilla vs. Position Godzilla”, and on Side B 1995′s “Godzilla vs. Destroyer” (using the title “Godzilla vs. Destoryah” since “Destroyer” can’t be copyrighted) . Both sides were delicate even when it came to video quality. I’ll begin with the certain which is, unlike Sony’s previous attempt with “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth”, that the disc presents the films in their novel 1.85:1 widescreen ratio, and features anamorphic enhancement. Sadly however, both films, especially “Godzilla vs. Place Godzilla”, enjoy a heavy amount of grain and print hurt, and a magnificent bit of artifacting too. There was also a lot of discolouration and brightness issues too. You’ve gained one thing, but lost another.

AUDIO QUALITY:
One very basic setup, Toho’s international English dubbing in Dolby 2.0. Like Sony’s previous release, it generally sounds elegant advantageous, with no distortion or other issues. It would have been nice to glance a current 5.1 remix or the current Japanese soundtrack, but alas.
EXTRA FEATURES:
Absolutely nothing, unfortunately.
OVERALL:
For everything Sony did fair with “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth” they did ghastly with this, and vice versa. This release has the bonus of being in anamorphic widescreen, but looses extra features and the gleaming image quality the previous release had. It’s a simple barebones disc for those that want the film on DVD, but perfectionists will really need to study elsewhere.

I grew up on DBZ from grades six to nine and I remember not being able to wait to peep the next episode every night. Lately I’ve enjoyed watching these sets and reliving a series that I never understanding I’d be able to bear with the draw they traditional to release it (3 episodes on individual releases) . Anyone who has bought the previous sets know what to quiz and for anyone who hasn’t all the boxes are always well done with the discs holding the episodes but not considerable more than that. The characterize and sound is sizable and it comes with a booklet with brief info on character’s (heroes and villains) and summaries of all the episodes. I also want to say that I like that funimationn has made all the sets the same layout so they lineup well on a shelf.
I Hope they release the ninth season earlier than May but who knows, whenever they do we’ll accept to search for the Fusion and Kid Buu sagas finishing up this series on DVD.
I’ve enjoyed rewatching these episodes that I remember so well despite not having seen them since they originally aired scheme wait on at the turn of the millenium. I obtain myself watching familiar moments and enjoying them in completely recent and different ways than I did as a youth. I’m distinct many relish this season since it’s getting us into the final saga’s and battles of DragonBall Z but I always found these sagas different for a reason that I’m impartial now view. Other than the thirteen originals that broadcast in the mid-nineties, that I actually remember watching, Dragon Ball hadn’t aired in North America so most of us were introduced to DBZ first. I got traditional to the prove being very science fiction oriented with the first few seasons of alien threats, set depart, killer androids and time disappear and then came this final bustle of Majin Buu, which was more about magic and crazy fighting techniques. After having seen the Dragon Ball series in it’s entirety now and looking at these episodes I delight in them more because I understand that Akira Toriyama had simply taken the series encourage to it’s roots for the final sagas. The novel Dragon Ball was all about crazy fighting styles and ridiculous moves and it had many elements of magic, for DBZ he had been influenced more by Sci-Fi in an attempt to change up the fable but here quick-witted he was bringing it to an raze he must have decided to purchase it attend to the earliest days.
Any fan of DBZ will earn these palatable, the final face off between Goku and Vegeta, Goten and Trunks learning Fusion, Goku transforming to SS3. I even gather Goten and Trunks trying to fight in disguise as an adult and Eighteen fighting Hercule in a melee tournament silly B stories. I’m blissful this will be out in February and can’t wait to conclude this series with the final two sagas and the ninth boxed dwelling. Thanks.

THE WHAT-IFs OF LIFE THAT YOU SIMPLY “ACCEPTED”![]()
This Merchant Ivory masterpiece is a must-own DVD: not only if you are intrigued by the labyrinthine world of English genteel lifestyles (butlers, under-butlers, footmen and the like), or some splendid British dialogue, but if you fancy an understated cinematic experience that still stirs emotion and circumspection comparable to that provoked by the written word.
Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson play the dignified servants of a manor between the walls of which “great affairs of the world are decided.” Both had me in their clutches at the very outset (set against the backdrop of the English countryside and exquisitely complimented by the music of Richard Robbins) and never let go. I was also somewhat surprised to see an early Hugh Grant and a young Ben Chaplin — both before they became famous, and you can see why they got where they are today.
Each and every screen of the movie is riveting, and all characters play their parts impeccably. With the possible exception perhaps of Christopher Reeves’ character — the brazen, world-saving American who calls other European topdog politicians “amateurs.” Yet, thats a minor gripe, and entirely overshadowed by Anthony Hopkins who so subtly reveals all the feelings that his character works so hard to repress that the pain is almost palpable.
There is also a nuanced romantic subplot, nothing is ever shown in somatic expressions of hugging and kissing, yet the tension between Hopkins and Thomson is one of the most memorable you will ever see. Unrequited love, was it?
The average moviegoer might find the film slow, but anyone interested in watching great actors excelling at their craft will be mesmerized!

Remains Merchant/Ivory ‘s finest !!!![]()
Arguably Remains of the Day is the finest Mechant/Ivory film ever made. Anthony Hopkins delivers perhaps his finest performance with an excellent ensemble cast that includes co-star Emma Thompson and James Fox. You’ll also see Christopher Reeve and newcomer Hugh Grant on board.
Merchant/Ivory films are often too precious and too tastefully presented to get overly excited about. Despite how beautiful they may look, I often find myself restless and then unsatisfied with their films that are often too stuffy and airless to ever experience more than once.
Remains of the Day is a little masterpiece of a film — A wonderful character study and period drama worth repeat viewings.
The story is wonderfully framed in the present day of the 1950′s, which sets the mood to enjoy the film’s exquisite earlier period details. The film’s stuffiness is natural because the story centers around the James Stevens (Anthony Hopkins) a butler who has takes great pride in being in complete servitude to his employer Lord Darlington (James Fox) and the large English country home he attends to.
Most of the film concerns itself with the late 1930′s and early 1940′s during World War 2 and Stevens’ recollections are centered around his very proper relationship with Sally Kenton (Emma Thompson) who worked as a domestic in the home along with him for many years. Perhaps he can convince the new present day owners of the manor and to let Sally Kenton again work with him once again.
Kenton and Stevens’ made a great Domestic team, Stevens’ recalls. In flashback we see Steven’s life working as a butler for Lord Darlington and watching some of the influential politicians, Lords and ladies pass through the manor hallways.
Hopkins’ performance is one to savor and study. His every inflection, glance, and expression carries several meanings. The longing he feels for Sally must be suppressed to perform his tasks to the utmost of perfection and Sally’s personal feelings for Stevens must like-wise be held in check because they are first and foremost devoted to their duties. They share a perfectionism and devotion to their work that nothing is allowed interfere with.
If the film sounds dull and stiff, let me assure you that this is a film of such grace, beauty and near perfection that it will haunt you for several years. You will focus on the smallest of details in the film and be richly rewarded for taking the time to do so.
The film is rich in period details (the cinematographer was Tony Pierce-Roberts) and offers an impeccable production design by Luciana Arrighi (“Anna and the King”), set decoration by Ian Whittaker (Anna and the King) and wonderfully re-created period costumes by Jenny Beavan and John Bright.
You won’t forget the performances of Anthony Hopkins or Emma Thompson in Remains of the Day.
DVD STUFF
“Remains of the Day” is presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen. A few minutes worth of minor print flaws and very occasional visible edge enhancements are the only minor drawbacks of this high quality presentation of the film. The picture is sharp and crisp, black levels are strong and colors are rich.
The soundtrack of the film is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 though most of the audio is front and center. The score is allowed to breathe around the room a bit but there is very little in the way of ambient noises of sound effects present which could have taken advantage of the the surround sound possibilities. No hisses or pops of noticeable distraction are present.
DVD EXTRAS:
Plentiful extras include an exclusive 29 minute short documentary: The Remains of the Day: A Filmakers journey. Crew and cast members along with novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, producers Ismail Merchant and John Calley, director James Ivory and composer Richard Robbins disucss the making of the film. Stars featured include Hopkins, Thompson, Fox, and Reeve who offer some criticism of their performances and high praise for the work of their fellow cast members and the director. It’s a love-fest but one that has some restraint and gives some interesting behind the scenes details of interest particularly in how the period details were recreated so beautifully.
There’s a 15 minute featurette which examines the issue of appeasement and how the attitude was partially responsible for allowing Hitler and Germany to become so powerful.
The 28 and a half minute HBO behind the scenes special from 1993 is more promotional in nature but of interest which features scenes for the film, behind the scenes footage and interviews.
3 deleted scenes can be viewed with or without optional commentary. They are presented in the open matte style which means viewers can see things like the boom mikes which are normally cropped out of the picture. Many will find this particularly interesting which is why James Ivory wanted to show the deleted scenes in this manner.
The commentary track on Remains of the Day is better than most. There are some long pauses in the commentary and some of it duplicates the information that is discussed on the documentaries. There are also many minutes over the course of commentary devoted to participants complimenting each other and those involved in the production. Emma Thompson is at times very funny, and livens things up when they get a little too slow and dry. Mechant, Ivory and Thompson provide an informative detailed and worthwhile feature length commentary to the film.
Remains of the Day is beautiful little masterpiece which features some incredible acting. The film is rich with details and the DVD is packed with worthwhile extras which makes this a Special Edition DVD very much worth adding to your collection. .

The Impact Of The Unspoken Word![]()
Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson give superlative performances as the head butler and housekeeper at Darlington Hall in pre-WWII England, where personal and international dramas are enacted. Set in the present, the film uses flashbacks to tell the stories of servants and Lord Darlington, a misguided gentleman who believed appeasement with Germany was the solution in the years leading to the Second World War. Hopkins is his very officious butler, a man who places duty and propriety above all things, even his true feelings for housekeeper Thompson. She is more forthcoming with her emotions, but she cannot bring him to open himself up, including a painfully well-acted scene where Thompson tries to get Hopkins to reveal to her the book he is reading.
If you are looking for loads of action and music-video style editing, this film will not be for you. It is a character and class study, and it succeeds admirably well on both levels. Hopkins and Thompson are both able to communicate subtle emotions with a simple pause or a look. The supporting cast is also fine. The screenplay allows the characters and drama to unfold slowly, establishing a feeling for the time and for the differences in class that existed in the era.
Remains of the Day is directed with understated style, allowing the setting and characters to dominate. Although it may be more literary than most films, don’t mistake it for something stuffy or inaccessible. It’s great drama about all too real characters that reminds us of the impact of the unspoken word.

Frankly, I’m elegant despondent about the future of quality TV on the major four networks. The current cancellation by ABC of the breathtakingly luminous PUSHING DAISIES was the first major blow. When a demonstrate this huge can collect cancelled for customary (not genuinely abominable, merely worn) ratings, you feel that something has gone scandalous with commercial television. For one thing, TV history is ravishing with shows that started off weakly and then succeeded a couple of years into their bustle. THE X-FILES, SEINFELD, THE OFFICE, and 30 ROCK all started off with customary ratings, only to develop an audience later. The second horrific fraction of news undermining my confidence in commercial TV was NBC’s announcement that starting next year Jay Leno will net FIVE HOURS (!) of prime time for a more politically oriented version of his talk present. First, why would we want Leno when we already have Stewart and Colbert? Second, this means losing FIVE HOURS (!!!!) of scripted programming on NBC each week. This is a recipe for pain. And an act of despair. NBC clearly doesn’t contemplate it can construct 15 hours of quality TV a week, so it is trying to gain only 10 and then grasp the well-kept cheap option with Leno. NBC, I have news for you: you earn what you pay for.

MAD MEN could well be the model for successful quality TV shows in the future. Although it gets very improper ratings, on AMC it is edifying from cancellation because of its widespread valuable acclaim. More and more, niche cable networks seem to be the set where quality TV series manage to thrive and avoid the constant threat of cancellation. AMC in fact has two genuine series, Excited MEN and the very promising BREAKING Terrible (which was seriously truncated by the writers’ strike last year) and they’ve announced a original Sci-fi series based upon Kim Stanley Robinson’s acclaimed Mars trilogy, about the settling of colonies on Mars. The series is taking its title from the first of Robinson’s novels, RED MARS.
So, while I’m on the verge of giving up on ABC, NBC, and FOX (though under unusual head of programming Kevin Reilly its shows have become more intriguing and he has so far resisted to slay shows prematurely as his predecessors did) . CBS I gave up on years ago, since the network seems remark to churn out an endless number of bland police procedurals. AMC, F/X, Showtime, HBO, ABC Family, the Sci Fi Channel, and similar networks may be where we all go in the future for the best shows.

MAD MEN became the first expose not on one of the grand four networks or HBO to earn the Emmy for Best Drama this past summer. It will almost certainly net again this coming summer, since Season Two was even better than Season One. Moreover, during Season Two the exhibit started building a buzz, culminating with a tall appearance by Jon Hamm on SNL, including a skit with some of his Indignant MEN guest stars. Thankfully people who do not have access to AMC can fetch up on DVD (I gaze it as it comes out, but my cable company shows AMC in low-def rather than high-def, so considerable of the show’s physical beauty can only be recaptured on DVD or Blu-ray) .
As sterling as the indicate was in Season Two, the sophomore season was even more intellectual. In my review of Season One, I mentioned that Jon Hamm’s character Don Draper exemplifies Thoreau’s statement that most people live “lives of level-headed desperation.” In Season Two, Hamm and his carefully constructed existence gradually begins coming apart at the seams. His Stepford Wife Betty begins to advance apart at more than the seams. I really enjoyed January Jones in Season One, but primarily she was a radiant manikin. In Season Two the human being inside is psychically rebelling against the roles she is being forced to play and the result is someone who is on the verge of collapse. One scene in particular was compelling. As she prepares for a dinner party she notices that one of the dining room chairs is wobbly. Keen the chair assist and forth gives draw to enrage, as she displaces the stress of her life onto the chair and she begins to demolish and obliterate it. Indeed, the many moments where Betty loses control are among the season’s finest.
January Jones’s wonderful performance as Betty gets a bit less acclaim than she deserves in fragment because of Elizabeth Moss’s job as Peggy Olson. I believe many people watching Aroused MEN began in Season Two to realize that Peggy, as worthy as Don Draper, was central to the meaning of the note. I have very puny evidence for this, but I have that the note will waste with Peggy Olson heading Excellent Cooper. The prove started with her first day as an employee of the company, working as Don Draper’s secretary. We’ve seen her become a successful copywriter for the company and at the destroy of Season Two even has the office next to Don’s. I occupy that a logical ending of the series, mapping al the changes that took status in national sensibilities in the sixties, would be for Peggy to become head of the company that at the commence of the year was so completely male dominated. This does not mean, however, that Peggy’s personal life has kept roam with her professional life. In fact, Peggy remains a bit of a mess. The season did destroy, however, with perhaps the best scene in the entire urge of the demonstrate so far. Peter tells Peggy that he hates his marriage and that he loves her. Shockingly, Peggy tells him that she had had his baby and given it away. Peggy is one of the most wonderfully complex characters on TV. While Don Draper has artfully created a public self, Peggy has not. But a flashback in which Don visits her in the hospital when she is suffering from post-partum depression (intensified by the fact that she didn’t even know she was pregnant) and essentially orders her to accept her act together and bag out of the hospital. Don is not always presented as a fine person, but he has his moments, and the tough like he gives Peggy at the moment helps her turn her life around.
I mention Don, Betty, and Peggy, but one of the delights of Wrathful MEN is the very deep cast of characters. Joan Holloway (played by the ravishing Christina Hendricks) has a novel fiancé, but it doesn’t appear to be the healthiest of relationships (one of the most homely moments in Season Two occurs when he rapes her in Advantageous Cooper offices) . The deeply closeted Salvatore starts gradually to confront his beget sexuality and his attraction to men, including a coworker, while his “beard” marriage struggles. Roger Noble struggles to overcome health problems in order to marry a worthy, noteworthy younger woman.
But at the heart of the explain Don Draper remains the dominant character. Jon Hamm’s performance as Don has been shimmering from the very beginning. On “Novel Air with Terry Irascible” series creator Matthew Weiner explained that Hamm instantly stood out in auditions, but the network wanted an established actor in the role. They were adamant that they did not want an unknown actor in the show’s central role. Unbiased as he creates ad campaigns, so he has created the persona Don Draper. Season Two shows Draper having serious doubts about whether he wants to persist in playing the character he has created for himself.
I read a bit over a year ago that the view for the explain was to proceed a couple of years into the future with each ensuing season. If so, Season Three should acquire up sometime past the Kennedy assassination, perhaps with the early allotment of the Vietnam War. This is easily one of the 3 or 4 best shows on TV. I do it up there with my absorb favorites PUSHING DAISIES, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, and LOST. Examine that of those shows PUSHING DAISIES was on ABC and has been cancelled, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS was on DirecTV in the topple and will be on NBC in the winter and spring, and LOST begins its penultimate season on ABC. I consider in the future fewer and fewer of my celebrated shows will be originating on the astronomical four. AMC, with Excited MEN leading the draw, is one of the last, best hopes for television.
The second season of this AMC series is in story/character sense a lot like the second season of Sopranos was for itself. This season spends it’s thirteen episodes expanding upon what has already been established at the same time as it balances sudden fresh tale devices and taking things to their next logical (or sometimes illiogical based on the character) extensions. I found it very appetizing and while it may not be a chunky reflection of life in the sixies it truly shows the aspects that it aspires to quite well and shows flawed characters who are pudgy of glum parallels with people in the world today.
The setting of the sixties is gargantuan, it’s nearly the perfect era to pair with such seemingly lost and sad character’s because of it’s ironic nature at the same time as the literal sense of reinvention and change that occured in that time. I feel the first season did a wonderful job of setting up this series. The second season acheived it’s goal of expanding, elaborating and extending upon the world and character’s we were introduced to. Now the third season is area up, like most shows, to consume the best from the first and second seasons and finally demonstrate us a complete vision of the exhibit without being tied down by these mandatory practices.

He then found Peachy and Danny in Michael Caine and Sean Connery, movie stars who are also spacious actors– of which there ain’t many, folks—and who are perfectly cast in the roles.
Moreover, Caine and Connery had been friends for a long time and this undoubtedly helped bring to life the camaraderie between the misfit heroes.
It is the slow 19th century and Danny and Peachy, formerly sergeants in Her Majesty’s Army, accept themselves stranded and penniless in India. Their ungrateful country has no further exhaust for them, although their officers once called them heroes “We fought our draw up the pass yard by bloody yard.”

So they are faced with three choices: Go benefit to England and occupy jobs as a porters or something equally lower class and menial, discontinue in India and continue to live more or less as petty criminals, or. . .
Well, let’s not give the situation away. Suffice it to say that when a reasonable Kipling (wonderfully played by Christopher Plummer) tries to dissuade them from their insane design, on the grounds that the odds against them are truly suicidal, Peachy dismisses his concerns with “Well, if a Greek can do it, two Englishman certainly can!”
–The Greek in expect being Alexander the Great–
And yes, women as well as men will indulge in this tall film. It’s a not a “buddy movie”, it’s a classic.

This is, of course, a ample film, with every aspect of what makes a sizable film fully exploited. But I did glimpse something unusual on the DVD – there is an entire scene missing. After Sean Connery falls from the bridge, instead of the process shot that shows him falling in slow-motion and the crown falling from his head (which is in every version of the film I’ve ever seen) the scene dissolves to Christopher Plummer listening to the final words of Michael Caine’s narration. What happened to the scene?? Why would it have been removed?? My only other quibble about the DVD is that the sound is not very rotund. It is an early release DVD so in subsequent releases they might address that deny, but Establish Help THE MISSING SCENE!

as a former exotic dancer, i bought this dvd to see what it was about. i liked it but i felt Method Man or who ever should have definitely visited more clubs & did more research. Atlanta was the best covered city (as far as strip clubs) they covered Strokers & Magic City which are the 2 hottest clubs in Atlanta. however this video gave los angeles strip clubs no justice at all. they didn’t even mention the main black club’s in los angeles: Rons Barbary Coast, First King or Starz yet they had 3 very odd looking girls in a hotel to represent l.a. This video should have at the very least visited strip clubs in l.a. somewhere.
i felt like there was a time issue (the dvd is only 72 min.) & this documentary was rushed to dvd. i hope there will be a part 2 or at least someone else will do a better documentary on the ‘strip game’.

overall its a decent flick to sneek-a-peek at if your into strippers, and the life. it could have been longer, and seemed a bit rushed. the problem is it was supposed to be a documentary, about the lives of the girls, inside and outside of the club, and how they got in the game etc…. but it only went into depth mabe twice. and then there were a few questions asked with the other girls. i think the problem was since they had to fit in different cities, and clubs they tried to do everything in a couple nights. if this were a true documentary they would have had to spend several nights with the girls, to truly get a glimpse into their everyday lives, then at the end they just totally got lost with the whole direction of the movie. if there is going to be a part 2 this will deffinately have to be worked out, and more time for production should be scheduled. like i said its a decent movie, just dont expect to see a 5 star movie.

Being that I’m a dancer I thought that it would have knocked some myths out, but @ the end it proved them w/ the L.A. girls. I love the DVD don’t get me wrong, but I hope they come out with A # 2 and do us justice.
I thought there could have been more dancing and more documentary w/ the girls and what they do, also.
