Is the best diagram to represent this 3 episode DVD! This DVD comes in at #32 in Anime Invasion Magazine’s Top 50 Anime DVD’s of all time.
The Lowdown: As most anime fans may know, before there was a “G-Force” and “Battle of the Planets” there was GATCHAMAN! This DVD series is based on the unique Gatchaman thought and character names, and not the edited down American versions that were produced later. So “Battle of the Planets” fans may wonder why there is no 7-Zark-7 or none of the G-Force team shouts, like “G-FORCE!” and my personal celebrated “TRANS-MUTE!”
The Story: What we have here is a chilly and stylish revamp that was produced in 1994 and now unbiased making its scheme to DVD. It features the famed Gotchaman characters in updated costumes and mecha. I wish this was made into a series instead of impartial 3 episodes.

Extras: If you already maintain the originally released VHS tapes and hope that the DVD offers some extra `bells and whistles’ there is nothing to be found here. Nothing on the menu other than episode, scene, seize and play- this is reason why I gave this DVD 4 stars.
At the demolish of the 3rd episode credits, there is a techno-house Gatchaman music video. Since I never bought the VHS version, I don’t know it was originally from the VHS release or not.
One advantage is that the DVD is a cheaper than buying the 3 VHS tape location. Oh, and the DVD I bought came with a frigid Gatchaman sticker inside.

Overall: If you are a “Battle of the Planets” fan, I recommend this DVD- it is grand! But I have to caution you, watching it may cause you “Battle of the Planets” flashbacks. And the next thing you know, you will be looking for some of those extinct BOTP episodes (which is already available in the U.K. on DVD, and will be available in the U.S. soon) .
I bought this DVD because I’d been going through Battle of the Planets withdrawl. I haven’t seen considerable of that American version of Gatchaman since the 70s, and could wait no longer for the soon-to-be-released Rhino DVDs, so I picked this up for some nostalgia.
Although updated with 90s anime flair, this reworking of the 70s Gatchaman was made with the Gatch fanboy in mind. It is updated in peek and pacing, but everything about the unique indicate is here – from the costumes to the characters’ personalities.
Since it is based on Japan’s Gatchaman, it is thankfully “missing” 7-Zark-7 and 1-Rover-1, whose sole purpose was to hold up the area created by editing out the more violent scenes in the indicate (don’t you adore American morality? ) .
The only enormous complaint I have is some of the novel music is stale (especially the song that plays during the menus) . Every now and then some of the stale music from recent Gatch plays, but it is so infrequent that one gets wretched when it stops.
Until Rhino releases the fresh Battle of the Planet DVDs in slow October ’01, this is savory viewing for those who fondly remember the novel series.

Like many of Ozu’s films, “Tokyo Yarn” (“Tokyo Monogatari”) examines a very simple stage in life, one that I hope most of us will be lucky enough to encounter at some time or another. In this case, it is how we treat our parents once we no longer need them for survival. Are they a bother? Do we resent their passe ways and slower scoot? Are we perhaps a bit too fervent to high-tail them to the sidelines?
The memoir seems so simple, an elderly couple leaves the country to visit their children who have moved away to Tokyo. Country folk meet city folk, age meets youth, life meets death. There are no large blow-ups, no crisis points reached or contrived dramas, honest life flowing along as it does. In Ozu’s gentle hands, the entire chronicle is told between the lines, with perhaps not a single sentence of recount dialog spoken in the film. Under the peaceful surface is an ocean of depth, emotions flowing with an unstoppable power, yet never able to breach the veneer of etiquette and politeness.
Ozu’s usual cast in at their best. Chishu Ryu plays the father perfectly, flawed and kind, strict in his youth yet lenient in his stale age, he is a father-figure more than a father to his impatient children. Chieko Higashiyama plays the kind and appreciative mother, remarkable the same character as in “Early Summer.” As always, Setsuko Hara, Japan’s “Eternal Virgin,” brings light and treasure into an otherwise infamous sage playing Noriko, the widowed Daughter-in-law of Ryu and Higashiyama’s son. Setsuko is ironically the only one of their children to like the passe parents, even though she is not a blood-child.

“Tokyo Tale” forced me to ask my believe treatment of my parents, and deem how I will be treated when it is my time to visit my children. Will they terror my coming? Am I kind to my parents? That is the kind of power this film has.
Of course, the Criterion Collection presentation is unbelievable, with one of the best transfers of “Tokyo Memoir” I have seen. It is far from flawless, but vastly suitable to my stale VHS copy. The extra documentaries are exquisite, and offer some insight into Ozu that in turn offers insight into his improbable films.
Ozu’s “Tokyo Account” is simply the most emotionally profound film I have ever seen. It is the sort of film that, after seeing it, may easily change you. I originally purchased the film because I was incredibly alive to in the “Ozu style”. There are many aspects of this minute Japanese man’s style, including shots of nature to fracture up the record, the tatami mat camera angle, the unmoving camera, and the shooting of characters speaking directly into the camera (which makes it all the more profound, it puts the viewer into the anecdote) . Ozu scarcely EVER drifted from this style, therefore it MUST have been quite improbable, for he never had the desire to change it. However, although I was compelled by the extremely radiant filmmaking style, it was the emotional impact that sticks with me the most. The record felt very uninteresting as it unwound, with worthy of the dialogue feeling very exiguous talk-ish. However, despite the fact I was initially disappointed by this microscopic talk-like dialogue, by the kill, I realized this slowness of developement made the raze all the more grand. This ending was so noteworthy that I was completely in tears for the final half hour or so of the film. This film was SO profound that I felt moved upon viewing it. Come the slay of the recount, when one of the daughters stated “Life is too short.” I was moved. I felt compelled to go out and live it up, for life IS too short. I also realized that I need to be noteworthy kinder to my parents, for they give me so remarkable, and they will not be around forever. As is said in one of the more notorious and compelling lines from the film, “One cannot befriend his parents from beyond the grave”.
You will be moved beyond words by one of the greatest films of all time, Yasujiro Ozu’s “Tokyo Account”

A agreeable romantic comedy, “Maison Ikkoku”, Vol. 1, kicks off this uniquely Japanese story; but the appeal of this timeless classic is universal. Heroine, Kyoko Otonashi, ranked this year as one of the top 5 heroines of anime by a poll of 10,000 adults taken by a major Japanese newspaper. Which is saying something considering that this exhibit ended 15 years ago.
Maison Ikkoku is a race down apartment building in Tokyo. Living there is struggling and wishy-washy college student Yusaku Godai, who falls head over heels in adore with the elegant, young manager of the building, Kyoko Otonashi. Kyoko has some feelings towards Godai, but she’s a widow, and serene is not over the death of her beloved husband, Soichiro.
Complicating matters between the two are rich, suave, hysterically dog-phobic, and heavenly tennis coach Shun Mitaka, Godai’s rival for Kyoko; and Kozue Nanao, a sweet, cute, and naive girl, who accidently becomes Godai’s platonic girlfriend. Kozue is clueless that Godai is in admire with Kyoko.

The crowning touch is the 3 other residents of the apartment building: hard drinking, hard partying and hard gossiping Mrs. Ichinose, who lives with her young son Kentaro; Akemi, a sexy party animal who is the bar hostess at local hangout ChaChaMaru, wearing her see-through negligee around the building; and then there’s the mysterious Yotsuya, who gets his kicks out of peeping, and breaking through Godai’s wall so that he can mooch food from Godai. These characters would be at home in “A Confederacy of Dunces”.
All 3 regard Godai as their personal toy, and they come by their kicks from teasing him and holding their drinking parties in his room. They also leer that Kyoko is also fun to tease.
The only problems with this DVD release is Viz. Viz has long mishandled MI, and the DVD release is no exception. No subtitles for the opening closing numbers (the opening number is quite nice, too), no extras other then textless versions of the opening and closing, but most of all, no cultural notes whatsoever. ADV and Animego would’ve done satisfactory justice to this note. Maison Ikkoku is space in Japan in the 1980s, the true time that the 15 volume manga which was the basis for the anime; the result is one of the best examinations of regular life in Japan. MI is so quintessentially Japanese, that a number of anime reference books employ the series to highlight aspects of Japanese culture.

However, the humor and romance will appeal to anyone with a sense of humor, or romance. The funny usage of misunderstandings is straight from Shakespeare, and any fan of screwball comedies will be rolling on the floor with laughter. But the characters are grounded in reality, and moments of drama and romance will often hold you by surprise. Godai matures as the series progresses, he’s only 19 when the series starts, and we peek Kyoko overcome the massive loss she suffered.
The only major bone to engage with the series is the dub version. Viz did a tainted job casting Ellen Kennedy in the role of Kyoko: her sing projects Kyoko as being tough cookie – it’s not the divulge of someone 21-22 years former. Sumi Shimamoto, however, is perfect, sweet, innocent, the perfect lady – which makes her shows of strength, stubbornness, jealousy and infuriate all the more effective. The English VA for Godai is not as terrible as the English version of Kyoko, but he’s not as agreeable as Issei Futamata, who makes you understand why the gals are keen in him, while also playing the klutz quite well. The rest of the stammer cast, English and Japanese, are grand.
Despite these problems, the result is a DVD release which is vastly honorable in every detail to the fansubbed versions which are available. The restored print is spacious, and the subtitles are both shapely and a expedient translation. But the heart of any DVD is the anecdote itself. By any standard, this 12 episode release for a retail impress of $49.99, is reasonably priced, especially when it can be obtained for less.
The first 12 episodes introduce the well-known characters, and are a gigantic example of the natural story-telling style of Japanese cinema: Where an American present would introduce all the major characters in the first episode, as well as the major status issues, these are effectively spread out over this DVD, introducing the key characters. These episodes came out in 1986, and the age is noticeable, compared with more unusual releases. However, due to the nature of this prove, it does not age badly, and some of the background art is pretty.
A few notes: Godai’s hiding in the closet in episode 1 is a parody on Japanese creation mythology: the sun goddess hid in a cave, only drawn out by the party caused by another goddess striping outside. The dog, Soichiro. Listen, and you will hear him called “Soichiro-san”. The Japanese honorific “-san”, is archaic only for people, and equals at that, never on a pet dog, which is why the name produces curiosity from cast members.
A titanic series, this DVD region is a must have for anyone fervent in Japan, any fan of creator Rumiko Takahashi, (Ranma, Inu-Yasha), as it is her best work, IMHO, or any lover of comedy, romance or the combination thereof.
I originally watched Maison Ikkoku from the Arctic Animation fan subtitles sometime in the early 1990′s, and I’ve been in treasure with it ever since. I assume (and many people fraction this belief) that Maison is Rumiko Takahashi’s best manga and best anime, and that’s saying a lot, since Takahashi has penned blockbusters like Ranma, Urusei Yatsura, and Inuyasha.

The fable is about a boarding house called Ikkoku-kan where a hapless student Yusaku Godai lives, along with a hard-drinking housewife Ichinose-san, her son Kentaro, a bizarre and secretive man Yotsuya-san who is constantly frustrating Godai, and Akemi Roppongi who is a sultry hostess at a local tavern. The tenants of Ikkoku-kan continuously torture Godai: they prevent him from studying, eat all his food, and party all night long.
Into this nightmare moves in a unusual apartment manager, Kyoko Otonashi. She is young and exquisite and Godai is instantly infatuated with her. The rest of the series is Godai trying to earn the admire of Kyoko over Shun Mitaka, a local tennis coach who also is in fancy with Kyoko. And despite the interference of the Ikkoku-kan residents!

It doesn’t sound like mighty to open, and surely this first 12 episode site proceeds slowly, but the storyline is well-developed, and the characters are heartfelt. My friends forced me to recognize the first 8 episodes, and after that I was twisted. But I’m guessing that if you’re pondering buying this series, then you probably have a great thought about the place and anecdote and such, and want some technical information.
The transfer is obliging. This series aired on TV in the ’80′s and that’s certain from the animation quality, but the job done on the DVD import is pleasurable, probably as pleasant as you could win in Japan. The Japanese audio track is mono because that’s how it was broadcast. But it has well-behaved sound quality and is very crisp.
I abhor dubbing, but for the sake of this review, I watched it. I don’t like it, but as far as dubs go, it’s passable. I would discourage watching the dub though because this demonstrate is SO Japanese that it relies a lot on the Japanese language itself.
The DVD’s have essentially no extras or features. It is fair the episodes. It’s collected a great deal, considering 12 episodes a spot for ~$45. There should be a total of 8 sets (96 eps) . I occupy 1-5, and belief on acquiring the rest.
My main criticisms of this collection:
(1) This series is so very Japanese that you HAVE to elaborate some things. For example, in the American mind, a ronin is a samurai without a master. In the new Japanese mind, it’s someone who’s failed the college entrance exams. This DVD plot NEEDS technical notes.
(2) The DVD liners are not that useful.
(3) The English dialogue loses a lot of intricacies above and beyond simple loss of Japanese. Takahashi is a colossal fan of puns and such, and this is all lost. Most valuable is the loss of Yotsuya’s poor poetry, including numerous attempts at haiku, often coming a syllable short or long.
Still, Viz actually did a grand job with this, and I’m planning on buying the whole area. But for your sake, here are some technical notes.
Numbers:
Most of the cast has names with numbers.
Otonashi means “no sound” in kanji and the “no” piece would be like zero, or the numberless manager’s room.
Ichinose – ichi = 1, corresponding to room #1.
Nikaido – ni = 2 (he is only in the manga)
Mitaka – mi = 3. Mitaka is also a rich district of Tokyo, signifying that the character is well to do, and would never live in a status like Ikkoku-kan, thus room #3 is vacant. It would be like saying Mr Beverly Hills.
Yotsuya – yo = 4. As is room #4
Godai – go = 5. As in room #5
Roppongi – Ro (or roku) = 6. Roppongi is also an entertainment district of Tokyo, signifying her job as a hostess at a bar and her personality. Akemi means red beauty (since she’s a red-head) .
Nanao – nana = 7.
Yagami – Ya = 8.
Kujo – ku = 9.
Chigusa – chi = 1000.
A ronin is a term for student who have failed the college entrance exams and are trying to pick up in, often attending cram schools.
A cherish hotel is a hotel you go with a partner to have sex. It’s like a hotel you’d rent a room by the hour. This is because a lot of Japanese households are extended, and you wouldn’t have the privacy to be intimate at home.
The sage is space in 1980′s Tokyo and there are some facets worth mentioning. Most people do not gain cars. This is a mammoth area symbol for Mitaka. Many homes do not have baths, and so people go to public baths. In the bath, Japanese bask in soaking in nearly scalding hot water. Trains are the notable mode of long distance move in Tokyo, so it is often featured in the anime. Despite being a bay city, Tokyo has no beaches per se, and so it is a long slouch to go to a beach despite being next to the ocean. Many people in Tokyo have ‘home towns’ and aren’t Tokyo natives (such as Godai) . Often, Tokyo natives had a sense of a lack of this ‘home town’ feeling, and a recurring theme in the storyline is how Ikkoku-kan has a feeling of home.

Ronin Warriors – *****
The Series that started it all for this franchise. The record is that these five teenagers were granted Mystical Armour to fight against the despicable Emporer Tulpa and his Dynasty. Tulpa has 4 warlords each wearing Armour similar to that of the Ronins. It is up to Ryu, Memoir, Sai, Kento, and Roen to finish the dynasty. Along the contrivance the earn allies in the forms of Mia, the daughter of an Archeologist studying the Armours, The venerable guardian of the Armours, White Blaze a white tiger who protects the Ronins as well, and a small boy who lost his parents to the dynasty (Sorry the name slips my mind at the moment) . Overall this series is around 40 episodes of Hard Hitting action and enormous record.
Ronin Warriors Original Adventure – ****
Buy,Download, Or Stream Ronin Warriors – Complete Collection! Click Here
The Novel Adventure takes space around 6 months after the Raze of the series. In that time the five ronins have kept stop contact with each other and are enjoying life. Then a mysterious african warrior shows up wearing a gloomy Mystical Armour of Inferno. It is during this series of episodes that the Ronins began to realize what the correct construct of their white armour of Inferno and they must end it. This one is not so mighty about record as it is action. In a procedure that harm it a slight but not great.
Ronin Warrior The Message – ***
This one ended up being an attempt to effect a slide off to the series. In the beggining of this it has now been years since their last adventure and now they have become accustomed to normal life. A novel sorceress shows wanting to waste the armours and replace them with her beget. She sets up doing this by either trapping them or Luring them into doing it willingly. The spot with this one is that it is too fable driven. There is almost no action what so ever. In fact most of the record is Flashbacks to the previouse two as well as earlier episodes in this OVA. With this one each warrior is going through in his mind what it means to be a Ronin Warrior. In the waste it is too legend driven and eventually objective becomes dull. It’s tranquil satisfactory, but not what fans would be expecting.
Overall this is a expansive series to earn. Highly recomended.
Please check the version that you decide to occupy. There are two versions of this boxed area, one is the precise deal and the other is a bootleg. I’m not clear which version this one is because the one I purchased was labled as the official status. It wasn’t till it came that I knew that it was labled Legandary Armor Samurai Troopers and was badly subtitled throughout the first five disks. That fact didn’t really bother me because I know the epic backwards and fowards and I also know some Japanese, but that might bother someone not that familiar with the anime. Of course there is always the option of watching the dubed version which I haven’t seen any errors in.
Ways You Can Teach A Bootleg While Shopping Online:
1) It says Residence All or Situation Code None
2) Fewer disks – The official Boxed site has 12 disks and the bootleg only has eight
Ways You Can Notify A Bootleg After You Gain It:
1) The Box has a compleatly different veil than the one advertised
2) The Box has the Japanese name instead of the English one
3) You go to study the subtitled version only to relize that there are gargantuan gaps in the subtitling causing confusuion in the storyline.
4) the record appears grany (I didn’t have this plight, but it does happen from time to time)
5) You gawk steps 1 & 2 in how to location a bootleg online (in the event of fallacious advertising)
I hope this helps. Ja ne!

First, I want to say that I highly recommend this anime to people suffering from Agoraphobia and Social Terror for many years, without any hope in ogle. Watching “Welcome to NHK” will not necessarily “cure” you, but it might “start your eyes” in many different ways and push you to recovery.

I’m not going to jabber you in detail what the anecdote is about – other reviewers done a enormous job here already. I will give you a different perspective.
I’m not certain if I can gain the correct words for this review, but I’m going to do my best… You leer I am a Hikikomori, and my life is very similar to Satou’s life. The fable is so factual, it’s scary… I too, dropped out of college because of my hikikomori ways. I am also stuck at home living off my parents income. (not by choice) I was also sucked into the world of online games and paranoia which really damaged me.

Each character represents different people that were or currently are a fragment of my life. Satou – Me. Yamazaki – my friends… Senpai – The girls that tortured my soul, and continue to torture it… Misaki Chan – a “metaphor/representation” for my hope?
The anime has shown me the many dim and laughable sides of myself and my life from a different perspective. It made me laugh.. It almost made me bawl.. It made me spy, (once again) what is scandalous with me, and what I must do to set aside an waste to all this. I judge this anime is a masterpiece, and I wish I could write a “Thank You Letter” to those that created both the script and the art. (I don’t even know who to write to)
PS: The only “speak” I have with this anime is the ending. I was expecting a very different ending. (those who saw it might understand what I mean) . On the other hand, this ending is new in it’s occupy plan, and perfect fair the blueprint it is.
Welcome to the NHK has become quite the phenomenon. Springing from the modern unique and then a manga series (both available from Tokyopop) it has also been released as an anime (produced by Gonzo and licensed by ADV) . The English language version features conventional suppose talents including Chris Patton as Satou, Greg Ayers as a astounding Yamazaki (no offense, Mr. Patton) and Monica Rial (as numerous benefit characters) .
The gist of the chronicle is that Satou, a hikikomori (socially inept shut-in) in an attempt to trace a girl who exposes her knowledge of his condition to him and offers her befriend in curing him, conspires with his neighbor and mature classmate to construct an erotic video game. He is paranoid and delusional and comes to absorb that an unsuitable organization has made him this pathetic excuse for a human being (the NHK, which is actually a major TV network in Japan) . It is both comical and queer and has laugh-out-loud moments, moments where you scratch your head, as well as moments in which you sympathize genuinely with Satou’s jam.
The first three episodes of the anime stick to the new storyline pleasing closely (including the talking refrigerator, et al) . The only omissions are the drug consume which spurn Satou’s delusional hallucinations (a fact that originate these fantasies in the anime a slight harder to swallow) and the dulling down of the loli-con (lolita fetish) references. In the new, Yamazaki is a crazy woman-hating loli-con freak who tricks Satou into becoming one himself for a short while. The scene where Satou drags Yamazaki to seize photographs is supposed to be his contrivance of showing Yamazaki how substandard his obsession with loli-con is, but the girls seem older and the specific reference to loli-con seems to have been turned into a general perversion order.
The fourth episode seems to pick a turn closer to the manga, where Yamazaki gets Satou further and further into the art of making the game and Satou ultimately runs into his senpai from school, a character who only makes a brief appearance in the new, but in the manga has a longer-running role. This leads me to fill that she will also have a larger role in the anime. Ultimately in the unusual nothing becomes of Satou and Yamazaki’s quest to effect their ero-game, though in the manga it seems a bit more comes to fruition about it, so I am qualified to own, though I haven’t seen any more of the anime than this volume so far, that it will engage a turn towards that direction. I do have a feeling, though, given the “special attack/bomb” references in the first episode that ultimately the anime will return to the fresh storyline at the slay (people who have read the unusual will understand) .
The anime, Welcome to the NHK, will be 24 episodes in length and 6 volumes. It is rated MA for language, (often bizarre) violence and blood, sexual innuendo and nudity, tobacco and alcohol spend and adult situations. Teenagers 16 and up may be passe enough to belief it, but I would not recommend this series to children. I do, however, recommend the series and suggest prospective viewers to rob up the original as well (it’s a short read, available now, and covers all of the storyline you’ll have to wait for subsequent volumes of the anime and manga to have revealed) .
