I was looking forward to perceive DOG SOLDIERS ever since I read a very obliging article about it in a British apprehension film magazine. When I spotted the DVD here on amazon, I immediately ordered it.
DOG SOLDIERS revolves around a squad of British soldiers on a training mission in the Scottish highlands. Soon odd things open happening. They encounter a badly wounded Special Operations officer, whom they lift with them. Attacked by werewolves, the squad suffers the first casualties but manages to effect a narrow flee with the relieve of a young woman. After reaching a remote farm, things turn from dreadful to worse when their car is destroyed by their devilish furry foes. Besieged, with no radio or phone connection, despairetly trying not to panick and running out of ammo, a fierce fight ensues with the almost invincible werewolves…

WOW! WOW! And again WOW! To my point of thought DOG SOLDIERS is one of the greatest panic films of all time, exceptionally well written, fastpaced with a strong storyline and likeable characters, who are not the mere monsterfodder as usual. You actually care for the sympathetic guys ( with the exception of the special operations officer ) . It is a steady pleasure to study a terror flick without the usual cast of annoying teens. I also found it refreshing that DOG SOLDIERS lacks the funny humour considered indespensable by so many directors. The position is very inventive and makes suited expend of the locations. DOG SOLDIERS is relatively violent and gory ( the disembowellment of the sergeant made me wince) but it is not splatter for splatter’s sake. And a apprehension movie without CGI is a sincere viewing pleasure in itself.
Some remarks on the DVD:
You can resolve between a widescreen and a fullframe presentation. As for extras, you have an audiocommentary, a featurette and two trailers, the international and the domestic one. The international one is widescreen, quite grand, but gives away too remarkable of the film, while the domestic one is presented fullscreen and doesn’t do the film justice.
Every few years a fear film comes along that simply wows genre fans. Maybe it has something to do with awesome gore effects, or a better than average station, or grand performances by previously unknown actors; it might even resemble something like “Dog Soldiers,” a fresh film that contains all of the above mentioned attributes along with a nifty reworking of one of horror’s dilapidated touchstones: the werewolf sage. Whatever it is that makes a panic film stand out, we need more movies that glance like this one. “Dog Soldiers” seemed to advance out of nowhere, like manna from heaven feeding weary dread fans slogging through the deserts of slasher film retreads and the new trend of mediocre remakes. The fact that this curious choose on the werewolf sage comes from the British Isles makes it even more noteworthy. The misty climes of the Scottish highlands are the perfect setting for such a bleak movie. Remember how successful “An American Werewolf in London” was when it took state in the same bleak atmosphere? You regain that type of oppressiveness in “Dog Soldiers” as well.
No one really believes in werewolves anymore. The whole business about people changing into bloodthirsty wolves when a rotund moon comes out impartial doesn’t seem as scary in a world of serial killers and terrorism. And shooting a beast through the heart with a silver bullet or stabbing them with a silver blade? C’mon! Something as easy as that wouldn’t even turn Jason Voorhees’s head for a second! Yep, in today’s world you will need something great more interested than a couple of hairy brutes roaming around in the woods once a month. Fortunately, you acquire remarkable more with “Dog Soldiers.” How about an entire family of werewolves, a squad of heavily armed soldiers on a training spend in the wilds of Scotland, and a deserted house in the middle of nowhere? How about a guy dauntless enough to purchase on an eight-foot great werewolf with his bare hands? How about enough gunfire to fabricate “Scarface” ogle like a Disney film? If you deem lycanthropes and assault weapons go together like milk and cookies, you will worship this film.

The set is seductively simple: a squad of army regulars, including a tough as nails soldier who recently flunked out of SAS training because he wouldn’t shoot a dog, runs into more than they can handle during a routine use out in the hills. They command a group of SAS troops torn to pieces in the wild, and net only one survivor of the group cowering nearby (who unbiased happens to be the guy who flunked our sturdy hero out of the SAS) . This colonel rants and raves about how there are more of “them” then we view, and how there’s no procedure to end them, and other seemingly wrathful statements. One thing’s for certain: anything that can turn a group of SAS commandos into hamburger would send me running home to mother. The regular army guys leer this disaster, too, and choose to pace proper out of the hills and befriend to civilization.
Regrettably, whatever attacked the SAS guys suddenly reappears to wreak havoc on our group of heroes. While fleeing through the woods from these gloomy figures, the men stumble upon a vehicle driving along a country lane. As it turns out, the car contains a delicate young lass who knows all about what’s going on in the woods. It’s werewolves out hunting for the night, she says, and as if to emphasis this point the lycanthropes attack the car. The group manages to rep to a nearby house and barricade themselves inside, but the vehicle goes up in flames and now there is no method out until morning. The rest of the film consists of one lengthy combat scene after another, as the soldiers utilize machine guns, blades, and their bare hands to bear off the group of mad wolves. Another thing: for some reason best left unsaid here, the werewolves seem to resent the soldiers holing up in this particular house. These guys unprejudiced cannot accumulate a atomize.
With the exception of one scene well into the movie that strains the bounds of believability, everything works in “Dog Soldiers.” The characters are bewitching and well developed, especially the Sergeant leading the platoon and the rejected SAS soldier. Even the cross SAS colonel who knows worthy more than he is letting on adds a fun dimension to the film. Throw in literally gallons of blood and gore, gallows humor dialogue, and pacing that fairly grabs you around the neck and you have a terror classic for the ages with this gem. I should also mention that “Dog Soldiers,” at one point in the movie, actually made me jump so high out of my chair that I nearly hit the ceiling. You probably won’t watch this shock coming, and I won’t spoil it for you, but if you don’t react in some diagram when it happens, you’re probably comatose. I salute a movie that can inspire such a jolt in my jaded system. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if “Dog Soldiers” gets a sequel in the reach future, if not for any titanic box office numbers then for heavy rental numbers and involved praise from many panic fans. I could see this film again and again without ever getting tired of it, and I contemplate you will like it too if you give it a chance.

Period music, locations, costumes and sets are all lovingly recreated. That can’t be said for the script. The actors are stunning until they open to direct. Cruz is the only one who conveys any depth or conviction. This movie, if you can’t negate by now, ends badly for everyone. Crucial information is withheld to provide a surprise ending that fails to explain. The expedient intentions of “Head in the Clouds” obtain its failures more noticeable. You want to like this movie but its surfaces won’t let you.
I like esteem adore this movie. I found it for $2.50 at Dollar General and I feel like going encourage there and paying more. It has everything from War, Esteem, Sex, & Death, what more could an Indie girl ask for? This is such an Oscar agreeable movie. If I, a 17 year musty, can savor a movie like this then I enjoy everyone can. I can’t give this movie enough praise.

I unbiased finished watching the newly released Special Edition of Holiday Inn. I was AMAZED at the clarity of the represent. I’ve never seen a print of this film looking so pristine. Even on unbiased a regular, 20″ non-HDTV situation, the hairs askew on top of Bing’s toupee during the well-known White Christmas scene are plainly visible. Now if you can explore single hairs on a person’s head during a medium shot on a dinky television area, that’s a stunningly definite recount!

The audio as well is crisp and certain with rich bass and treble tones. If you ogle the film with the audio commentary on, you’ll hear the dulcet tones of Ken Barnes relating some spirited tidbits about the making of the film, the songs (one particularly consuming piece concerns the verse to White Christmas), the cast, etc. All is enhanced by sound bites from Bing and Fred Astaire themselves in archive audio material from the 1970′s. As an example, Bing speaks of the continuing sales of his recording of White Christmas as unhurried as 1974, how he felt it was due in share to people giving the narrate as a Christmas gift.
The dependable gems are the bonus features, particularly the 45 slight long mini feature A Couple of Song & Dance Men. Ken Barnes is joined by Fred Astaire’s splendid daughter Ava sharing biographical memories of both Bing and Fred, along with trivia tidbits. Ava shows and reads some of the letters Fred Astaire wrote to his wife while on a USO tour in England with Bing in 1944, and telegrams to Fred from Bing, Cole Porter, and Irving Berlin are also shown on cover. All is pieced together nicely with song excerpts from Bing’s films, coming attractions trailers, and newsreel footage, including Bing opening the Stage Door Canteen in 1944.

The other, shorter bonus feature runs 7 minutes and is titled All Singing – All Dancing. Ken shares some rare slow the scenes photos and techniques of how musical numbers were filmed, beginning with the early talkies. He shows how the orchestra and singer were together on the region and recorded as one.
The unusual theatrical trailer for Holiday Inn is also included.
All is wrapped up nicely with a slip-cover that goes over the DVD case. When compared with the two-on-one DVD of Holiday Inn and Going My Method that’s been out for many years now, the disagreement in quality is plainly visible. The Holiday Inn print looks somewhat fuzzy or “muddy” in quality when watched after seeing the brilliance of the newly restored print conventional on this Special Edition.
In short, this is a DVD that’s well worth having. If you want the definitive presentation of this classic Holiday film, this is it! Bravo Ken & co.
I always felt this movie deserved a restoration to withhold its 1942 style B&W richness. Unfortunately this movie has NOT been restored to its recent rich and pristine Dismal & White splendor! It HAS been remastered meaning no cuts or deletions and also includes an approximate 42 dinky mini biography of both Fred Astaire and Bing Crosby and a short part about the making of the song and dance numbers of Holiday Inn.
A holiday perennial along with Miracle on 34th St. and It’s A Unbelievable Life, this novel release is truly a Special Edition!

Sony/TriStar does a better job on this double-feature disc of two of the 1990s Godzilla films than they did on the poor disc of “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: Battle for Earth.” This time the films are in widescreen and stereo. Unfortunately, they are level-headed dubbed (and very poorly, too), and the extinguish credits are peaceful chopped off, but I can at least recommend buying this disc for its improved visual and audio quality.
(In a side notice, Sony/TriStar has impartial made available three of the fresh Godzilla films in widescreen editions with 5.1 sound and a choice of English dub or Japanese with subtitles: “Godzilla vs. Megaguirus,” “Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack,” and “Godzilla Against MechaGodzilla.” They may also release the two film on the this DVD in individual, deluxe packages, so you may want to wait a bit before deciding to consume up this disc.)
However, I can only recommend one film on this disc, the terrific “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah,” which brings a conclusion to the 1990s `Heisei’ series of Godzilla films in an apocalyptic fable that links assist to the modern 1954 “Godzilla.” Godzilla’s radioactive heart has started to melt down, a condition that threatens to raze the entire planet. The military scrambles to gain a draw to prevent the slay of the world, while psychic Miki tries to track down Godzilla’s son, now a tough teen who looks like a half-sized Godzilla. And on top of all this, a unusual creature has suddenly appeared, born out of the weapon that killed the modern Godzilla befriend in 1954: the mutating crustacean/dragon beastie Detoroyah. The action is plentiful, as are the effects, and the film fair thunders along. It’s everything you want in a Godzilla film. Godzilla Jr. facing the crab-leg version of Destoroyah is one of the large monster fights, the finale at the airport is knowing, and the ending is heartbreaking. It’s a astronomical blueprint to ruin the second Godzilla series. If this film stood on its acquire, I’d give it five stars, easily.

In fact, it’s best that you don’t contemplate of this disc as a double-feature at all, but a single disc containing “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah,” with “Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla” as a bonus feature. Because “SpaceGodzilla” is Dreadful. Made factual before “Detoroyah” by a novel director who came out of Japanese teen films, “SpaceGodzilla” is lifeless and utterly comic. Godzilla Jr. looks like Barney the dinosaur, SpaceGodzilla is a ridiculously lumbering thing, and the military’s recent super-robot, MOGUERA (based on a robot from the 1957 film “The Mysterians”), looks like some kid’s transformer toy, only not as well constructed and with Woody Woodpecker’s head. The situation is sloppy — something about SpaceGodzilla imprisoning Godzilla Jr. while a conspiracy almost wrecks the anti-Godzilla team called G-force — and the performers behold bored. The large action sequences seem to go on forever while nothing happens. The finale is impartial Godzilla and SpaceGodzilla standing far away and roaring at each other, while the military fiddles endlessly with their useless machines. The special effects are unpleasant and inactive as well. Not even Godzilla fans will be able to tolerate this film for long. On it’s acquire, “Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla” is worth only one star, easily. So I’ll have to average my rating out and give this package three stars.
I recommend this disc for “Godzilla vs. Destoroyah,” which is colossal even in dubbed format. Explore the other film, positive, but believe of it as a bonus not factored into the impress. You’ll feel better that method, and $16.99 is a delicate glowing trace for a edifying, widescreen, stereo Godzilla film. (But withhold your fingers crossed for even better editions in the future.)
VIDEO QUALITY:

The release contains 2 films on one disc – on Side A 1994′s “Godzilla vs. Position Godzilla”, and on Side B 1995′s “Godzilla vs. Destroyer” (using the title “Godzilla vs. Destoryah” since “Destroyer” can’t be copyrighted) . Both sides were delicate even when it came to video quality. I’ll begin with the certain which is, unlike Sony’s previous attempt with “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth”, that the disc presents the films in their novel 1.85:1 widescreen ratio, and features anamorphic enhancement. Sadly however, both films, especially “Godzilla vs. Place Godzilla”, enjoy a heavy amount of grain and print hurt, and a magnificent bit of artifacting too. There was also a lot of discolouration and brightness issues too. You’ve gained one thing, but lost another.

AUDIO QUALITY:
One very basic setup, Toho’s international English dubbing in Dolby 2.0. Like Sony’s previous release, it generally sounds elegant advantageous, with no distortion or other issues. It would have been nice to glance a current 5.1 remix or the current Japanese soundtrack, but alas.
EXTRA FEATURES:
Absolutely nothing, unfortunately.
OVERALL:
For everything Sony did fair with “Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle For Earth” they did ghastly with this, and vice versa. This release has the bonus of being in anamorphic widescreen, but looses extra features and the gleaming image quality the previous release had. It’s a simple barebones disc for those that want the film on DVD, but perfectionists will really need to study elsewhere.
