I have seen this movie twice and have loved it both times. It is a comical and endearing romantic comedy that is peppered with a terrific cast and capable performances. I would gladly peep it again.
Calvin Webber (Christopher Walken), a nerdy, nutty scientist, and his passe and very pregnant wife, Helen (Sissy Spacek), are living in California in fifties style splendor in the early nineteen sixties, when the Cuban Missile Crisis occurs. Buying into the red fright of the day and convinced that attack by the communists is imminent, they immediately go underground into the desirable deluxe bomb shelter that Calvin had had the foresight to get under his house and fully equip with enough supplies to last thirty five years. No sooner do they do so, Calvin’s fears are reinforced, as suddenly a force of mountainous impact shudders overhead. Thinking that they were hit by an atomic blast state off by the communists, they hunker down for the next thirty five years, waiting for the radiation to dissipate.
In the interim, they have a baby boy, whom they name Adam (Brendan Fraser) . As Adam grows up, he is unknowingly caught in a time warp with his parents, as they have no contact with the outside world. Adam’s world opinion and values consider that of his parents, as his entire life, thus far, has been spent underground soley in their company. When the thirty five years are up, Calvin surfaces briefly to check the dwelling of affairs topside. What he sees, he misinterprets, and upon his return to the bomb shelter ends up having a heart attack. He and Helen then dispatch Adam on a reconnaissance mission to catch needed supplies.

What transpires when Adam ventures into the outside world is very amusing and often poignant. As played by Brendan Fraser, the thirty five year worn Adam, a unusual faced, polite virgin with no fashion sense, has a Dudley-Do-Right quality and a load of goofy, precise charm that ensures the comedic success of this film. His foray into the outside world, his endearingly innocent interpretation of all that he sees, and his interaction with others will leave the viewer laughing. When he runs into Eve (Alicia Silverstone), the hard edged, appropriately named, delicate blonde with a heart of gold, he is smitten. Together they will leave the viewer hoping that Adam and Eve will pick up the Garden of Eden.
Christopher Walker is unbelievable as the slightly nutty, paranoid but bright scientist. Sissy Spacek shows a obvious comedic flair as the patient and long suffering wife who buys into her husband’s vision of things. Dave Foley of “Kids in the Hall” fame is terrific as Eve’s drolly amusing, overjoyed roommate. Alicia Silverstone, while ostensibly the weakest link in this otherwise brilliantly cast comedy, aloof manages to give a more than acceptable performance as the cynical Eve. It is Brendan Fraser, however, with his aw-shucks, innocent veneer, who deftly steals the indicate lawful under everyone’s nose. His charming and humorous, ingratiating performance is one that will have the viewer watching this film over and over again. This is a must have comedy for one’s personal collection.
In 1962, my junior high school science roject was to develop a model fall-out shelter, complete with lists of supplies for 30 years underground. My father, who was a scientist, hung out with a bunch of guys who so closely resemble Calvin Weber (Christopher Walken) that I was startled to search for him in the movie. These guys built hi-fis and robots in their basements for fun; and yes, my parents listened to Perry Como! BFTP portrays the essence of those times fondly and with a pointed humor. Both Sissy Spacek (the mother) and Christopher Walken (the father) do beautifully funny turns in this film as a couple having retreated to their fall-out shelter for a 35 year conclude in the erroneous conception that Los Angeles has been bombed.
Brendan Fraser’s performance as the colorful but impossibly naiive Adam Weber is shining. Playing a totally sheltered (no pun intended) 35 year-old encountering the outside world for the first time, Fraser manages through exercise of his mobile facial features and skillful body language to search for like a nerdy 14 year dilapidated. The performance was strongly reminiscent of Tom Hanks in Grand.

Alicia Silverstone and Dave Foley play strong supporting roles as Eve, Adam’s esteem interest, and her contented room-mate Troy. The strongest scenes in the movie feature all three of them. For major laughs, leer Eve and Troy’s faces while they peep Adam do a splash on the dance floor.
This movie made me a Brendan Fraser fan. I liked it so grand I bought copies for several people for Christmas. Lest you assume this is only for Boomers, I showed it to a 24 year archaic friend who completely cracked up over it.

I’m distinct that anyone spending the time reading reviews of this Honeymooners Box Status, doesn’t need any reassurance as to the prove itself. What more needs to be said about Ralph and the gang? The gargantuan 39 episodes never fail to relate. The Honeymooners remain the prime example of television comedy at it’s zenith. The display, while serving as a fabulous time capsule of it’s era, is astoundingly unique, having faded beautifully. *********About the Box Set************As I read other reviews here I realize that there is some confusion regarding this location. It almost makes me possess that there is another box area floating around. Anyway, the one I am referring to was unbiased released November 2003…(not definite why even Amazon has it listed as 2000) . I gawk that others are complaining that the shows are not chronologically placed on the discs, but grouped thematically. While that would be a limited annoying to me as well, such is NOT the case with the state I purchased…all are in the order that they were originally aired with the airdates given. Another complaint that I’ve seen posted is in regards to the quality of the transfers themselves. Once again, I can’t imagine that these reviewers are seeing the same Box Position as I am. I am a rather picky viewer and try to finish informed…I’ve never seen the note peer or sound better. Pretty Gloomy and White. (I will attest to the fact that the episode “TV or Not TV” does not watch or sound as wonderful as the rest, probably inherant in the source material…not a biggie though) . As far as extras…not mighty here. The Anniversary special included here is a shortened version and isn’t all that informative or even considerable for that matter. Yes, it would have been nice to have more extras…interviews, commentary, bio’s, etc…, but for the stamp of this site, you are getting the gold, which is the reveal itself. I assume CBS/Paramount realized that people are becoming wary of titanic, expensive box sets, and aren’t purchasing them. Case in point…Fox went all out in their release of Mary Tyler Moore Season One. Gargantuan packaging, loaded with extras, expansive transfers. Now they are claiming that it didn’t sell enough to warrant their releasing of any further seasons. So fans are left hanging with a spacious Box Region of Season One…with no more to arrive. Ridiculous! ( Fans of that reveal have started a petition…if involved go to mtmshow.com) ******All in all, since the Honeymooners only had one season filmed, it could have been released with more extras, but with a prove of this caliber it certainly stands on it’s maintain merit. For under $40, to have the complete Honeymooners crisp on obvious on DVD…how can you complain?
Having been born 24 years after the initial showing of the Honeymooners, I might not be the target audience that came to mind when this DVD collection was assembled. Comic is amusing, however, and these “Classic 39″ episodes of the Honeymooners are the funniest half hours ever shown on television and the greatest station comedy of all time.
You honest don’t perceive shows like this now. Nothing is this well acted or this well written. And nothing is fair this comic. This is a husband and wife struggling to gain by and they peep like it, too. This “Friends” where the cast lives like millionaires. This isn’t “Fraiser” where they work in some high-profile industry. Ralph drives a bus and Norton works in the sewer (an “underground engineer.”) The Kramdens and Norton are loyal people and exact neighbors.
What made the prove work so well was the actors. Jackie Gleason owns the material. He doesn’t even have to say a word to provide a hilarious moment. Unbiased contemplate him stew, his face contort while listening to his mother-in-law impartial prior to his renowned blabbermouth rant.

Audrey Meadows is perfect. When Gleason sets ‘em up, Meadows’ Alice knocks ‘em down like no one else. Ralph: “The bills will secure bigger & bigger, and I’ll obtain less to eat. Then you know what I’ll explore like? ” Alice: “Yeah, a human being.” Episode after episode, she deadpans sever down and chop down with deadly accuracy.
Art Carney’s Norton should have his fill statue in Washington DC. A terrific actor playing the piece perfectly. Like Meadows, Carney has an uncanny chemistry with Gleason. You really can feel the history between the two characters, as if they’ve been best friends for long enough to be terminate friends and long enough to catch on each others nerves all the time.
Likewise, you glean the same feeling between Ralph and Alice as well as Norton and Trixie, who — played by Joyce Randolph — is the perfect match for screwball Norton.

And of course, there is every else that made the present so big. Bert Weedemeyer, Mr. Marshall, the Pleasant Raccoons and Haaaaaarrrrrvy.
Every episode has one belly laugh moment and at least a half dozen spacious lines. I’m buying two sets. One for myself and one for my – Brooklyn born and raised – dad for Christmas.

Movie Title: Scrooge Scrooge is available for streaming or downloading. |
SCROOGE has been a guilty pleasure of mine for many years. As a kid (before cable came along) I hoped that one of the local stations would play the film around Christmas time. I probably haven’t seen SCROOGE since I was 11 or 12 years customary.
The newly released DVD looks unbelievable. The film is 33 years dilapidated, and its production accomplish and colors are rendered well on the DVD. The overture is included.
Here’s some mercurial impressions after seeing the film again:

- Alec Guinness is a genius! As Marley’s ghost, Guiness has some very droll moments. See his performance closely: Guiness achieves “ghostliness” without the serve of digital effects. Explore him “float” parts of his body, especially his hands when he sits down. The wobble, the issue, the “floating”. Simply knowing.
- There are several very first-rate songs. My favorites: “I Like Life”, “Thank You Very Distinguished”, and “Happiness”.

- I actually like the flashbacks when Scrooge is young and in savor. Very touching. And aesthetic.
- They really edited this film for TV! There’s scenes in SCROOGE that I’ve *never* seen before; specifically, the scene in hell at the demolish. Humorous!
So, even though SCROOGE brought Christmas into my house in September, it was a welcomed, early celebration.
While this version of the classic Dickens’ legend did not receive famous acclaim, it remains one of my favorites and richly deserves this DVD release.

Albert Finney is magical in his portrayal of Scrooge, transforming his physical appearance through the art of makeup and glorious acting from a robust youth to an customary man during the course of the anecdote.
The supporting cast is also distinguished, and the songs add flavor to the overall atmosphere of Dickens’ era London, as well as gigantic and unexpected depth to the core theme of the story: the precarious reclamation of a person’s soul.
Dickens’ radiant fable manages to mutter religious themes without preaching, and provides an accessible character in Scrooge that we can understand, root for, and ultimately, rejoice with and learn from when his heart is turned outward to his fellow man.
Vastly animated and remarkably new, this life-affirming version of “A Christmas Carol,” along with many of its songs, will end with viewers long after the final credits have rolled. For me, “Scrooge” has become a treasured Christmas tradition alongside so many other beloved yule time favorites. I applaud its long overdue DVD release!
