Exposed in this film are the squalid, rent controlled apartments in China, provided by the company, that keep to shame the most rancid ghetto house in your hometown. And if the employee chooses not to live in these rat-infested housing developments, the rent is calm deducted from their wages. Wal-Mart has managed to lower the work standards place for these hard-pressed, obscene wage, third-world countries that other companies are going to follow, sucking down the standards of working all across the world.

The manager of the Mexico factories went on a tour to fabricate clear that working conditions were humane. He was fired when he reported that the conditions were intolerably inhumane. In his maintain words, he didn’t deem retaliation would be brought against him for doing his job.

Wal-Mart has refused to address crime statistics that indicate an upswing of violent crime in their mammoth, remote, under-lit and un-protected parking lots, putting their customers in concern and taxing the local law enforcement. The Status of California alone paid out 80 Million dollars in medical benefits to poverty-level Wal-Mart employees because the 102 Billion Dollar Walton family does not want to give their “associates” glorious medical benefits.
There are many ways to detest Wal-Mart and its ilk, and many books out on the subject, but I recommend watching this DVD so you can actually stare the slave workers and conditions overseas that these selfish billionaires exploit without passing down their profit to the “microscopic people” who helped produce their empire. The presentation could have venerable a microscopic more snappiness, and the DVD starts out very dreary, but sustain watching and you will eventually contemplate the monster peeking out from gradual your curtain.

Most viewers strongly disagree with the conception that “Riddles in Stone” is less impressive than “The Modern Atlantis.” On the contrary, “Riddles” is said to be the best documentary ever produced on Freemasonry and the influence of secret societies in America. This influence is revealed through the architecture of Washington D.C., but this only forms a backdrop for the filmmakers to prove the occult nature of Masonic philosophy. Most impressive are the contrasting interviews with Freemasons and other members of arcane societies alongside those who criticize Masonry for having a hidden agenda.
One can hear from their occupy mouths what the Masons and esoteric groups really possess — and their answers will shock you. If you want to learn the disagreement between “conspiracy theories” and Proper history, look this film. The visual evidence presented in the architecture, street layout, and various monuments in Washington D.C. are undeniable. Also, the film is the only documentary I’ve ever seen that actually explains why there is an “unfinished” pentagram in the street layout north of the White House. The evidence comes from Masonic sources — all of which is very well documented.
There is also a very informative share on President Bush, the Skull and Bones Society, and how the Bavarian Illuminati may have influenced the perform for Washington D.C. But most insightful is info. on the book, “Fire in the Minds of Men” by Dr. James Billington (the novel Librarian of Congress) who documents the influence of the Illuminati on the revolutionary groups of the 18th-20th centuries. A clip of President Bush saying that his administration has lit “a fire in the minds of men” becomes very telling — once the fat context is presented.

While I agree that Secret Mysteries of America’s Beginnings: The Unique Atlantis – Volume 1 was done well. I must respectfully disagree that Riddles in Stone is “not up to par”. Where are the specifics to that charge? I found Riddles Vol II to be favorable in presentation than Vol. I. Study Riddles in Stone and invent up your fill mind.

Animal husbandry and marriage in this delightful, touching and funny film about nomadic life in Kazakhstan
Asa is a young Kazakh who, having completed his military service, wants to return home and become a sheep farmer. The problem is he must first be married and the only eligible woman within many miles, the shy and elusive Tulpan, is just not interested.
Celebrated Kazakh documentary filmmaker Sergey Dvorsevoy won the Prix Un Certain Regard at Cannes for this, his first dramatic feature. Astonishing in its simplicity and for its intimate depiction of rural life, the film is also surprisingly funny – a simple humor that is far removed from that of the more popular but utterly false portrayal of Kazakhstan in Borat.
The performances, mostly by individuals who had never acted before, are astonishingly genuine. It’s hard to believe they are playing a role, and that this is not a documentary. Even more stunning is the authenticity of the scenes. There is, obviously, no CGI here, and nothing is fake, but through patience Dvortsevoy was able to capture some surprising and exciting moments – a twister that appears suddenly in the midst of a confrontation between two characters, an angry camel mother attacking the vet who cares for her son, a sheep giving birth and a genuine performance of Asa’s surprise and wonder and helplessness, all in a single take without cuts. Lovers of great films should celebrate this deceptively simple and lovely film.
A Touching Tale with the Feel of a Documentary
Dense with the realism and light humor of daily existence, Tulpan at times has the feel of a documentary, yet it is a touching fictional tale about finding one’s place in the world.
Asa returns from naval service and has expansive dreams of a free and prosperous life on the Kazakh steppe. For them to come true, his brother-in-law must give him a starter herd, he must find a wife in a desert devoid of humans, and he must earn his stripes as a herder. Asa is impatient, does not fit in, and seems powerless to realize his dreams. When he is pushed to the brink, ready to give up on his dream, he has a transforming experience of life and rebirth. Dvortsevoy films with a patient eye (Tulpan took four years to film), turning the gritty landscape into a character in the film, helping to convey the utter isolation (but not hopelessness) of life on the barren steppe. This is a quixotic and delightful tale of self-discovery that offers a vivid look at what life is like in this secluded corner of the world.
Quietly powerful, starkly beautiful and utterly unique
I was very fortunate to be able to see TULPAN at a small movie theatre (rather than DVD) so that I could enjoy it with a few dozen other folks. But it will play just as well on a wide-screen TV (the bigger the better, though)…because it is in many ways a travelogue. A skewed, touching and somewhat haunting one…taking you to a place you know you don’t want to go. Seeing it with a group, I felt as though we were on some kind of slow moving tour bus, allowing us to visit the stark land of Kazakhstan. If you saw it alone, no doubt you’d feel like a lone traveler, beating up your car’s suspension and working hard to keep your car on track in the wind. TULPAN is the most tiny and intimate of films…yet has almost deliriously expansive panoramas of a land that is as forbidding as any depicted on screen.
Young Asa has recently returned home from his service in the Navy. He comes from a family of hard-scrabble sheep herders on the Steppes of Kazakhstan. He is a vibrant, easy-going and slightly dimwitted young man. His burning desire is to have his own herd, but this will not be granted to him until he marries. There is pretty much only one eligible young lady in his sparsely populated corner of the world, and even though he has never even seen this girl (named Tulpan), because she holds the key to his happiness, he feels he is in love with her. She declines his offer, ostensibly because she doesn’t like his big ears. The real reason may be that she wants a life in the city, perhaps with an education. Asa loves the harsh land that has been his only home, and he yearns to own his own way there. You have no doubt that he would treat this girl well and give her a “traditionally happy” life…because he clearly has no malicious bone in his body.
Asa is undaunted in his efforts. While he schemes to win Tulpan’s agreement, he lives with his sister and her family, which includes 3 children and an older, grumpy husband. Asa tries to help out on the farm, but he’s so eager to please, he can’t help but trip over his own feet, so to speak. He fails to endear himself to his brother-in-law, who also urgently wants Asa out of the house.
And that’s about it for the plot. I won’t kid you; TULPAN is a slow moving film. Very little that we would think of as earth-shattering happens. Yet the movie accomplishes two very rare things, and thus it continues to resonate with me more than a month after I saw it.
First, Asa and his family feel 100% real. They feel NOTHING like most people you and I are ever likely to know…but we immediately understand and empathize with all of them. Whether it’s the dutiful sister & wife, who wants only harmony in her family, and clearly loves all the people in her life with great intensity or the pre-teen daughter whose only distraction is to sing to herself…constantly and loudly. Asa himself is all heart and little brain…yet you’d be hard-pressed to find a more decent, open & sincere a person. And none of them feel like actors (they aren’t pros)…we actually feel like we’re spending time living with these folks. Seeing and EXPERIENCING their everyday lives of tending to their yurt and their sheep.
Second, and perhaps most stunningly, we get a true sense of PLACE. The cinematography is simple yet stunning. Kazakhstan, to my eyes, is a stark place with little obvious beauty. But we get to glimpse it through Asa’s eyes from time to time, and are able to see how HOME can be a beautiful place to the person who feels at home there…not matter what everyone else sees and feels. And there are long, lingering shots of the land and the people and animals on it. One stunning scene I will try to describe: the shot involves a still camera, which at first shows us the side of a building, some fencing and mostly a path leading out onto the bleak steppes (the land looks like you’d imagine dust-bowl America to have looked). We hear sounds of approaching animals. Sure enough, sheep move into the picture and off into the distance, followed by dogs, donkeys, men, children, poultry and so on. The camera never moves, and nothing really happens except that the various “life forms” pass by us. Yet we get such a clear understanding of their relationships and importance to each other.
TULPAN has moments of GREAT humor (one scene involving a camel is particularly hilarious) and sometimes touching drama (you’ve never thought the birth of a lamb could be so dramatic). But I’ll say again…it isn’t a story where the traditional idea of a plot is all that important. Yes, things happen to Asa, and the issue of Tulpan is resolved. But the real pleasures of TULPAN will come if you simply allow yourself to be immersed in the life the film wants to show you. It’s a harsh and alien life…but if ever a movie showed an American audience how much more ALIKE we all are than DIFFERENT…TULPAN is it.
When I started to write this review, I was thinking 4-stars. But as I wrote and remembered…I understood that for me, this film really is 5-stars. Perhaps the most quiet, understated 5-star film I’ve ever reviewed…but it is a movie that I think will always come back to me over the years as being not quite like anything else I’ve ever seen.

The premise with this History Channel series is to remark specific battle history while showing (through re-enactment) what the engagements really looked like…and this DVD situation hits the ball legal out of the park! Watching the battles at Antietam, Gettysburg, Shiloh and (my popular) Wintry Harbor on the accurate battlefield is phenominal…it really adds so distinguished to the narration that you actually pick up the “feel” of being proper in the middle of the conflict. Each battle covers sufficient detail that the tale of the “everyday” soldier gets told along with distinguished “fresh” information that makes this DVD current (for example…on the Fredricksburg episode, the slight known epic of the Confederate private who risks life and limb by going onto the battlefield to assist the injured is a featured portion of the account but these are details that I couldn’t salvage in books from Foote, Catton or the capable volume on Fredricksburg by George Rable) . The narration also includes “expert” analysis from eminent historians and authors (Gordon Rhea in the trenches at Chilly Harbor…) that add additional perspective to the storyline. The battle stories are about 1 hour long and each stands on it’s gain so that you can end at reasonable intervals without missing anything. Overall this is necessary Civil War viewing for the historian but calm presents itself well enough for the general viewer so that all viewers should derive gargantuan enjoyment from watching…highest recommendation!
The Civil War Combat DVD area is probably by far the best reeanactment/documentary on four different battles that raged throughout 1861 to 1864. The historical accuracy and care to details given captures the importance of such warfare that took situation at Shiloh, Antietam, Gettysburg (Wheatfield) and Cool Harbor. There isn’t anything closer to the steady action as reeanactors are old-fashioned for the production and isn’t stupefied on showing blood. This 2-DVD production isn’t a Gettysburg that shows trim fighting or lacks the details commonly found in movie productions. Crank up the surround sound while viewing these stout reeactments as bullets whiz by often and status the viewer just on the field. Soldier accounts of the action is backed by narratives which enhance this big production. The History Channel that has establish this station together has definately contributed to telling the tales of four battles which had strong impacts on the war. It can’t be told any better! This 2-DVD region is a must have for anyone fervent in the Civil War. Nothing like this has ever been done to accurately characterize such actions before. It’s certainly worth every penny!

Originally produced for PBS television, the Emmy-winning “Before Stonewall” is a must-see documentary for anyone researching Gratified American history. What makes this film so invaluable is its success in recreating – through photographs, film clips, and later-day interviews – a period in time that was carefully and deliberately NOT recorded as it was happening due to the pervasive institution of “the closet”, and the very accurate dangers that faced those bold enough to crack originate the door and step out into the light. As one intrepid lesbian pioneer remembers, impartial being accused of being a pleased woman was grounds for involuntary commitment to a mental institution during her youth. Shrimp wonder, then, that there is such a paucity of material documenting the jubilant movement pre-Stonewall, especially during the years from 1900-1950, before the earliest Ecstatic and Lesbian social and political institutions in the United States were founded.
The cornerstone of this distinguished film is the handful of interviews conducted with some elderly activists from the years before the Stonewall riots began on June 27, 1969. With humor, dignity, and matter-of-fact courage, these men and women screech personal stories about their experiences in the armed forces, in the halls of government, in society, and in their home lives during the years in which America at spacious experienced the roaring Twenties, the Tremendous Depression, the Second World War, the beginning of the Baby Bellow era, and the radical Sixties. Their recollections are not only intelligent and brilliantly told; they are of indispensable importance in plan the factual heritage and history of today’s American happy community. The DVD edition offers some enchanting extra material, including some expanded interviews, and footage of poet Allen Ginsberg reading two of his early compositions. Very highly recommended in terms of both quality and sigh.

The movie attempts to collapse about forty years of joyful history into a documentary of about ninety minutes. With a plethora of interviews, people telling their hold stories, it’s astounding what it does cloak. While the depth of the history may be somewhat lacking, the valid impact of the document is an plan of the roots of where the happy movement came from.
It seems as we enter times of trial and tribulation, it’s vital to understand our roots. It’s those roots, based in the stories that are in this movie, that ground us and abet instill a sense a pride in where we’ve advance from, and where we’ll be going. With that pride comes strength, strength of will, strength of character. The people who so bravely walked before us, in the 1920′s where wearing a red tie with matching hanky was the most clear trace, to those impressive slide queens who finally decided that enough was enough, are our sources of self-empowerment.

I have caught some of these episodes on History Channel and this series is the one to see if you’re at all keen in thought and experiencing the old-fashioned civilizations covered, be it Petra, Rome, Greece, the Mayans, etc.

The series, which encompasses 27 journeys to sites and cities, not only presents novel filming, but also, in many cases re-creates the sites using phenonemal computer graphics that let you sort of peep what these places looked like when they were built.
This is so comprehensive, I can’t wait to accumulate it.
I agree with others that this is one of the best historical documentaries available, especially on Classical Mediterranean civilizations (Greece, Rome, and others) . There are six discs in the series, each disc containing five episodes of 20 minutes, except the last disc which has only two. Although 20 minutes may not sound like powerful, so distinguished is packed into each episode that they do not disapoint.

Each episode shows historical ruins related to its subject, beginning with maps to let you know when and where you are, and frequently using animation to reconstruct the ruins as they appeared in their prime. The narration uses the pictures as a starting point to discuss the culture and history represented by the ruins. The series frequently provides a fairly in depth discussion of the culture, ordinary life, religion, etc. of the peoples who lived in these locations, not impartial stories of battles and rulers.
The other outstanding aspect of this series is that it covers a wide variety of cultures, time periods, and geography. It works best where history can be told as the history of individual cities, which is the case in the Mediterranean world (the tremendous majority of the episodes) and also for the Mayans in America.
A sterling example of the recent near of this series is episode two. From the title “Fair Rome”, I was expecting a tour of classical Rome using models and virtual recreations, since generous examples of these are now available. Instead, the episode showed only brief shots of the unreconstructed Roman forum, and centered instead on the ruins of outlying Roman cities to display the favorite culture which existed over the extent of the empire.

Disney’s AMERICAN LEGENDS is a compilation of several spacious legends of America’s past, celebrating stories of ample men doing colossal (and not so substantial) deeds. The selection of stories is arresting, and each has a definitive position in American (and Disney) history. While the stories may be a bit different from what you were told (if you were told them at all, considering most of the heroes are not what one would call politically lawful), all in all, it’s an exquisite collection that my family watches about once a month.

James Earl Jones ties the collection together with live action narrartion putting an accurate historical context to the proceedings. His delivery and tone strike a balance between serious education and tongue-in-cheek thought.
The first anecdote is JOHN HENRY, directed and lead absorbing by Stamp Henn, the animator who brought Jasmine (from Aladdin) and several other major Disney heroes to life. With narration by the gigantic Alfre Woodard and a stirring rendition of the “John Henry” song by the Sounds of Blackness Choir, the short is good. From the backgrounds intended to give the feel of folk art and quilting, to the rough animation occasionally showing through (the rough lines haven’t been “cleaned up,” showing the power of the animator’s recent drawings, and giving it a less “heavenly” recognize), JOHN HENRY is a improbable short, and the necessary reason Disney released the collection in the first station.

JOHNNY APPLESEED (originally from MELODY TIME, a compilation feature released in the early 1950′s) is told and sung by Irish tenor Dennis Day. Some nice animation, including some stout stylized moments designed by Disney artist Mary Blair (whose distinctive watch inspired most Disney features of the 1950′s), plus the substantial “The Lord is Obedient to Me” song, create JOHNNY a nice treat.
PAUL BUNYAN was released as a short in the early 60′s and features the catchy title song sung by the Mellomen. Vast bass squawk actor Thurl Ravenscroft brings Paul’s booming philosophize to life, and there are some genuinely funny bits based on Paul’s exploits in creating some of our most famed natural landmarks (Pike’s Peak, Yellowstone Falls, etc.) . Paul is definitely not a hero in this day and age, since his claim to fame is massive deforestation. Oh, for a simpler time.
THE Gallant ENGINEER is the anecdote of CASEY JONES, who really wasn’t very sparkling and gained fame for crashing his command into another one. The short itself isn’t very brave (unlike John Henry, who gives his all to indicate humanity can best machinery; Paul Bunyan, who helped obvious the contrivance for settlement in the West; or Johnny Appleseed, who helped feed hungry settlers), mostly being an excuse to have Jerry Collona (the stammer of the March Hare in Disney’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND) to do a myriad of voices, terrible puns, and the like. It’s quite intelligent in itself, but not at the level of the rest of the shorts.
There are several reviews here who engage umbrage with suitable problems, but they appear to be getting their grand tales mixed up (it was Joe Magarac who melted himself into steel, NOT John Henry), and those who idea the release as bit of shrewd marketing by Disney miss the point that Disney had planned to release JOHN HENRY with other gallant shorts long before the events of 9/11.
While it is somewhat lacking at the raze, and could have old-fashioned PECOS BILL (from Develop MINE MUSIC, narrated by Roy Rogers and the Sons of the Pioneers) to earn a really smashig conclusion, on the whole, the collection is friendly, and quite exquisite.
This is a amazing device for children to learn about American historical figures. My 3 year old-fashioned son was continually entertained by the songs and different animation. It is a must have on our Disney list.
