I saw an arrive screening of “1″ and highly recommend this documentary. This is exactly the kind of film that helps balance out the negative misperception of public education in America that our public schools are paunchy of underachieving youth. The movie follows a fresh season of a football team from a northern California high school, De La Salle, a team which was on a unprecedented 13-year winning paddle. From what I understand the school had turned down multiple offers over the years from other considerable film makers to document the players and the much coaching staff before granting Mr. O’Hara an “all access pass” to the team. Through clarify interviews with the players and coaching staff, as well as tedious the scenes locker-room and game footage you learn the teams “secret sauce”. But thats not really the point of the film. “1″ is the sage of over-coming adversity through brotherhood, discipline and spirituality that honest happens to be focused around football. Should be mandatory viewing at schools across America.
“1: The Anecdote…” is a must in every coach and sport’s fan DVD library. I first caught on to this anecdote as most of us did: cramped blurbs on the news and puny anecdotes in the paper. When I saw that goingdigital films and Tim O’Hara had spent a season with the team, I decided to bewitch a shot and order this DVD.
I should mention that I coach softball and girls soccer, and when I showed the girls soccer team pieces of the DVD they were immediately curved. We were looking to initiate a tradition of excellence of our absorb based on hard work, honesty, morals and Christian values. The girls instituted aspects from the documentary such as chapel time and committment cards into our maintain season. As a matter of fact, at our first chapel the girls stood up and hugged to seal their committments to each other unbiased as Coach Ladoceur’s players do after their occupy team chapels.
These ideas have become the basis of what we did (and serene do), and the cohesion we picked up from Coach Laudceur, his team and his staff were a major inspiration that created our success.
When other coaches at my school found out about Tim O’Hara’s work and how we were using it, they began to ask to borrow the DVD. Now, nearly a year later, the DVD has been widely viewed and highly appreciated by nearly every coach in our building.
The beauty of this yarn is that it’s not about football. It’s about sports, life and the admire of teammates. It’s about a coach who has stayed humble (despite ridiculous success), who never preaches the sermon but simply lives it, and who might unprejudiced knock you off your seat with his dry delivery of mighty words.
Shot beautifully, this DVD captures the essence of high school sports and the good definition of “success” at this level. It’s not always ravishing, it’s not always contented, but at its best it is pure and objective. In a day of Terrel Owens arbitration cases, steroid-using baseball players and coaches who seem to have lost their influence to players who produce three times what they do, “1: The Myth…” reminds us that we can quiet go out to the local ballfield and rep sports at its best.
And if you’re a coach, it reminds you that your job matters for all the apt reasons.
